The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 157

"Giving me back my purse and my phone so I can go home. That matters."

Jamie hooked her chin again, pulling her face back toward his. His voice sharpened. "I've told you three times. Either you stay here quietly, or I'll send you right back to jail."

A resolute glint in his eyes sent a chill down her spine. She frowned, a wave of indignation washing over her. On what grounds? When she was his wife, she had followed his every command. But what were they now? By what right did he still think he could order her around?

A profound weariness settled over her. She was too tired, mentally and emotionally, to keep fighting with him. She just stared at him, keeping her body angled away.

But Jamie's voice cut through the silence again. "Where is your home? Do you even have one? Without me, do you think Margaret would give you a second glance? Then again, it’s not so surprising she raised a daughter who turns on someone the moment they've helped clear her name."

Suzie stared at him, stunned, as fury ignited within her. Was he taking every opportunity to humiliate her? If Margaret had been her real mother, she would have scratched his face without a second thought for saying such a thing.

She took a deep breath, trying to calm the tightness in her chest, and shot back with cold sarcasm, "You're right. I don't have a home, or a good mother, or any manners. So you'd better let me go before I dirty up your nice clean apartment. Besides, I've already stepped aside for you and Chloe. She's pregnant with your child. Why are you still clinging to me?"

His tone was laced with self-mockery, but his smile was utterly chilling. The look on his face made her blood run cold.

Was he implying she had been unfaithful during their marriage? What proof could he possibly have? Did talking to another man while married now count as an affair?

Suzie forced down another surge of anger and paused before speaking. "Jamie, don't judge everyone by your own standards. I've told you before, I never did anything to betray you, and the children are yours. This is the last time I will ever explain it to you. Believe it or not, it really doesn't matter to me anymore. I am more than willing to cooperate with a paternity test. So, can you please let me go now?"
