Ruby clapped her hands, beaming with excitement. “Wow, that sounds amazing! With our family’s status, I’ll be like a true socialite, won’t I?”
Watching Ruby’s delight, Suzie felt a pang of resignation but kept her voice gentle. “Even better than a socialite. Now, you just have fun in here, and I’ll come find you in a little while.”
After settling Ruby, Suzie hurried downstairs to the kitchen. She pretended to be organizing the preserves, using it as a cover to dismiss all the maids from the area. Once she was alone, she quickly slipped the hidden phone from its hiding spot into her pocket.
Then, with a composed expression, she returned to her bedroom. After locking the door, Suzie immediately turned on the phone, setting it to silent mode.
Not daring to waste a second, she dialed Stella’s number. Thank God, the call went through, and Stella picked up.
“Stella…” Suzie’s voice cracked, like a child who had finally found a parent after enduring endless hardship. That one word carried all the pain she had been holding in.
Worried someone might pass by and overhear, she slipped into the large wardrobe.
“Suzie! Suzie, where are you?!” Stella’s shocked voice shrieked through the phone.
