Chester's gaze remained locked on Suzie as he muttered, “Impossible. You’re Suzanne. Why are you here? Why are you working as a maid for the Baylor family? Jamie said you were married with three kids… what’s going on?”
Suzie was completely bewildered, but she had no interest in getting entangled with him. She was so close to freedom and couldn’t afford any complications.
She rose slowly from her chair and adopted the deferential tone of a servant. “Sir, I think you’ve had too much to drink. Or perhaps I just bear a resemblance to someone you know.”
Seeing that they were alone, she spoke while lifting her apron to reveal her pregnant belly. "Mr. Baylor was telling the truth. I have three children, and this is my fourth. And my name is Suzie Sterling.."
She let the apron fall back into place. “If you still have doubts, please wait here a moment. I’ll go get my ID for you to see.”
With a slight nod, she turned and headed upstairs.
Chester’s face was a mess of conflicting emotions, his eyes never leaving Suzie’s retreating form. Even her back looked exactly the same.
He didn't believe in perfect doppelgängers. Yet, the woman before him had a different voice and a completely different air than his Suzanne. Suzanne was wild and outgoing, a fan of heavy makeup and a loud talker. This woman, Suzie, was pure and gentle, her voice soft and delicate.
He ran a hand through his hair, pacing anxiously around the dining room, unable to make sense of it.
A moment later, he saw Suzie coming back down the stairs and hurried to meet her.
She politely handed him her ID card.
Chester’s hand trembled as he stared at it. Suzie Sterling. It really wasn't his Suzanne.
