“You prefer a quiet life. I’m doing this so you won’t be burdened by attention on your future outings.”
Suzie scoffed inwardly. *Such a good line.* That was Jamie for you. When he wasn’t being gentle, his words were sharp enough to pierce your heart. When he was, he was a master charmer. She didn’t respond, instead urging Ruby in the passenger seat to hurry up and get out.
Once they reached the women’s apparel section, Suzie pulled Ruby along, intentionally leaving Jamie trailing behind them. Ruby was impossible to contain, bouncing from store to store and wanting to see everything. Suzie followed her in and out of shops, but her eyes kept flicking to the clocks on the walls.
“Suzie, you don’t like any of these? Why aren’t you picking anything?” Ruby asked, holding a beautiful dress up to herself in the mirror.
Suzie glanced at Jamie, who was sitting on a guest sofa not far away, and answered distractedly, “I’m looking. I just haven’t seen anything I like yet. I’m bigger now, so a lot of clothes don’t fit right.”
Ruby glanced at the price tag on the dress, then shot a furtive look at Jamie before whispering to Suzie, “Okay, Suzie. But… can I really pick anything I want here? Look at this dress, it costs a fortune…”
“Take whatever you want,” Suzie said flatly. “Jamie has plenty of money.”
Ruby beamed. “Okay! You’re the best sister ever. I’m going to go try this on,” she said, pointing to the fitting room.
Suzie checked the clock on the wall again. It was almost time. Plus, this store was very close to the restroom where she was supposed to meet Stella. “Ruby, you go ahead and try it on. I’m going to the restroom,” she said, gesturing toward the exit.
“Okay, Suzie!”
