Jamie slowly stood up. “Do you need me to carry you over?” he asked gently.
“No, I’m fine now,” Suzie replied flatly and immediately started walking toward the restroom. She didn’t want to talk anymore; she was desperate to speak with Stella.
“I’ll wait for you here,” Jamie’s voice called from behind her. “This marble is slippery, so be careful.”
Suzie paused for a second but didn’t reply, walking straight into the restroom. The moment she was inside, Stella pulled her into a stall. Suzie fell into her friend’s arms, so choked with emotion she couldn’t speak.
Stella hugged her back tightly. After a moment, she gently pushed Suzie away and put a finger to her lips, signaling for her to be quiet. Stella took out a tissue to wipe Suzie’s tears, then her own, before pulling out her phone. She typed quickly and showed the screen to Suzie.
“Someone could be listening. Let’s type instead.”
Suzie nodded eagerly. Stella typed again: “The house in the small town is all set, but the lawyer is out of town. He’ll be back the day after tomorrow. You’ll have to hold on for two more days.”
Suzie took the phone and typed back quickly: “Okay. I’ll find a chance to call you the day after tomorrow in the afternoon.”
After reading the message, Stella pulled a tiny, slim phone and a charger from her bag. She handed them to Suzie, leaning in to whisper in her ear, “This is easier to hide. We can stay in touch.”
