Jamie frowned, studying Suzie. He was seeing a side of her he had never seen before. The logic and tone of her speech were like that of a seasoned professional. The old Suzie was never like this; her voice was always soft and gentle, her demeanor yielding and polite.
Had he changed her?
He’d wanted to keep her by his side, so he’d had Aaron pin the liability for the equipment on her. Was that wrong?
After a moment of silence, Jamie said, “Go pick out your clothes first. We can discuss this in detail later.”
Suzie shot him a look but said nothing more. She picked out a few comfortable outfits, a sun hat, and a face mask.
When she came out, she clearly had no desire to return to Baylor Manor immediately. She’d been cooped up in the hospital for days, and being stuck there was even more suffocating.
Looking at Jamie waiting by the door, she stated plainly, “I want to have lunch out.”
It wasn’t a question; it was a declaration.
Jamie’s eyes fell to her belly. “The food outside might not be healthy,” he said gently.
Suzie didn’t reply, but her expression showed no sign of compromise.
After a tense moment, Jamie pulled out his phone and made a quick call. He hung up, took another call, and then said, “Let’s go. Aaron reserved a private dining room upstairs.”
“What about Ruby?” Suzie asked.
“Don’t worry about her. I told the bodyguards to stay with her while she shops. She’ll figure out how to get food when she’s hungry.”
Before Suzie could hesitate further, Jamie was already pulling her toward the elevator.
Once they were in the suite, Jamie removed her hat and mask, then pulled out a chair for her. “Sit. Aaron has already ordered. We need to talk.”
