“Suzie, can we both try to let go of the past?”
Suzie continued eating without a word. After a moment, she finally responded, “If you had endured two years of coldness and humiliation, could you forget?”
Jamie paused. “You feel hurt, but what about the pain I felt?”
“What pain?” Suzie retorted. “You didn’t trust me, so how were you hurt? You were so gentle with Chloe right in front of me. And how were you with me?”
Her sharp words left Jamie momentarily speechless. Was she blaming him for not treating her well? He wanted to have a calm discussion, but it seemed she had more grievances to air than he did.
After a moment of silence, he said, “About Chloe… she once saved my life.”
Suzie scoffed internally. So he thought he owed Chloe his life? If that was true, then why had he married her?
This was the first time she had heard this, but she felt that repaying a debt and being overly familiar were two completely different things. Besides, Chloe herself had claimed they had slept together. How could she know if Jamie was telling the truth?
But her heartache over him and Chloe was a wound from before their divorce. Now… it was just a dull ache that surfaced when the topic came up.
Since she was leaving anyway, maybe she should let his heart suffer a little too.
