A drumbeat of anxiety started in Stella’s chest. She was terrified her expression would betray her.
Putting on a nonchalant act, she turned and walked back to her desk, pretending to search for a file in the cabinet.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Jamie sit back down on the sofa, showing no intention of leaving.
This time, Stella had no clue who he had just called or what they had said to elicit such a reaction from him.
But more than that, she was worried about Suzie.
As Stella flipped through folders, her mind was already miles away.
Meanwhile, Jamie sat on the sofa for only a moment before abruptly rushing out the door.
Seeing him leave, Stella waited a beat before hurrying to the front desk to confirm he had left the building.
Only then did she return to her office, relieved. She quickly grabbed her burner phone and called Suzie.
"Suzie, have you made it?" Stella asked anxiously the moment the call connected.
She couldn't shake her worry about Jamie’s earlier phone call. What could possibly have happened at this critical juncture to make him look so pleased?
Could he have been so resourceful as to have already found Suzie somehow?
If so, all their efforts would have been for nothing.
On the other end of the line, Suzie heard the worry in Stella’s voice. "What's wrong, Stella? Did he come looking for you?"
Stella let out a breath. "Yes, but he’s only suspicious right now. He has no proof, and he's already left."
Suzie also breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, everything went smoothly on my end. You don't have to worry."
"Suzie..."
A loud, unfriendly bang echoed from the glass door just as Stella began to speak.
She’d heard Jamie Baylor was an odd man, but she never imagined he was this bizarre.
So, what was his game? He couldn't get answers based on suspicion, so he faked a phone call, put on a show, and left, only to storm back in, assuming she would immediately call Suzie?
And after dropping a couple of strange remarks, he just leaves again?
And that last line? What was that? Something a three-year-old would say?
Did getting dumped by Suzie scramble his brain?
Stella amused herself by imagining a news headline: "Mornhaven's Wealthiest Bachelor, a Baylor, Driven Insane After Being Dumped..."
She almost laughed out loud at her own fantasy.
But she didn't dare call Suzie again. Jamie's piercing gaze had swept over every visible corner of her office. For all she knew, he might have already heard her say Suzie's name.
