Stella’s words landed, and Jamie’s face instantly darkened. He rose slowly and advanced toward her. “Stella, no one has ever successfully played games with me. Do you understand what I’m saying? I am serious about Suzie. She has already agreed to remarry me. Besides, have you thought about how she’ll survive after you’ve taken her? She’s pregnant and will be alone. Who’s going to take care of her? You’re not helping her; you’re hurting her. That’s not what a real friend does.”
Jamie’s point about Suzie’s well-being was Stella’s biggest worry, but she didn’t let it show on her face. He had come in with threats, and now he was playing the sympathy card. She’d been in the business world long enough to know all these tricks.
Stella feigned ignorance. “Funny, that’s not how a real husband acts, either. Weren’t you always accusing Suzie of cheating? If that’s the case, and she’s really missing, wouldn’t she run to the man you suspect her of being with? Why would she come to me? I’m incredibly busy, and I’m sorry you wasted your valuable time coming here. Please see yourself out.”
Stella gestured pointedly toward the door.
But Jamie didn’t move an inch.
His eyes were locked on hers. After a moment, he held up his phone, displaying the saved surveillance footage. “Tell me, is this girl Suzie? And is that you next to her?”
Stella had anticipated he would scrutinize the footage. She was prepared to remain perfectly composed.
She leaned in for a closer look, then frowned. “Based on my observation, that can’t be Suzie. I haven’t seen her in days, but her belly should be quite noticeable by now, shouldn’t it? This woman doesn’t look pregnant at all.”
Jamie lowered his phone. “Where were you an hour ago?” he asked casually.
Stella’s lips curved into a smile. It seemed she had predicted his entire line of questioning.
