Stella’s fingers flew across the screen.

“Hey, I told you not to say that. Let him watch. I have to travel for work now and then anyway. I can just leave from another city to come see you. Just message me when you get there.”

“Okay,” Suzie replied, overwhelmed by a mix of gratitude and guilt. She was terrified of causing Stella even more trouble.

Thinking of Stella, Suzie slowly lifted her gaze to Oliver, who was focused on driving. Her mind flashed back to the moment she’d gotten into his car, following Stella’s directions.

Oliver had glanced at Suzie in the rearview mirror, his eyes immediately welling up. He cleared his throat, his voice low and raspy. “Suzie… I was useless. I couldn’t protect you.”

Suzie, having just settled into her seat, met his gaze. In the small, palm-sized mirror, she saw his haggard face. He looked like he hadn’t shaved in days, his features etched with a deep weariness. His red-rimmed eyes were filled with guilt and helplessness.

Suzie slowly reached out and took the items, her voice thick with emotion as she asked, “Your… your mom is out of the hospital?!”

She hadn’t had a chance to ask about his mother, Helen, let alone visit her, yet Helen was still thinking of her… Suzie gently stroked the bag of cookies, a storm of feelings churning inside her.

Oliver nodded. “The stab wounds weren’t in critical areas. It was probably her age, combined with the shock and some underlying health issues, that caused her to fall into a deep coma. But she’s recovering very well, so don’t worry.”

Suzie frowned, gently chiding him. “Even if she’s recovering well, those wounds still need time to heal completely. You shouldn’t have let her do any work.”
