Meanwhile, Suzie quickly typed back a reply.
“I’m still on the road, but I’m fine, don’t worry. As for Jamie… if he can’t find anything, he’ll definitely have people watching you. Stella… I’m so sorry. I’ve caused you too much trouble.”
Stella’s fingers flew across the screen.
“Hey, I told you not to say that. Let him watch. I have to travel for work now and then anyway. I can just leave from another city to come see you. Just message me when you get there.”
“Okay,” Suzie replied, overwhelmed by a mix of gratitude and guilt. She was terrified of causing Stella even more trouble.
But on her own, she had no way of escaping Jamie.
No amount of polite words could express her gratitude to Stella now. She would have to find a way to repay her kindness in the future…
Thinking of Stella, Suzie slowly lifted her gaze to Oliver, who was focused on driving. Her mind flashed back to the moment she’d gotten into his car, following Stella’s directions.
Oliver had glanced at Suzie in the rearview mirror, his eyes immediately welling up. He cleared his throat, his voice low and raspy. “Suzie… I was useless. I couldn’t protect you.”
Suzie, having just settled into her seat, met his gaze. In the small, palm-sized mirror, she saw his haggard face. He looked like he hadn’t shaved in days, his features etched with a deep weariness. His red-rimmed eyes were filled with guilt and helplessness.
