Just then, the phone Stella had given her rang.
Suzie quickly answered it. “Stella…”
“How is it? Are you settling in okay?” Stella asked, her voice full of concern.
Suppressing her emotions, Suzie replied cheerfully, “I love it here. And I love the house you found for me even more.”
But after just one sentence, her composure crumbled. Her voice caught as she said, “Stella… if it weren’t for you, I think I would have…”
“Don’t be silly. We’re friends for life, so none of that formal talk. By the way, I checked out the street you’re on when I was there. It has all sorts of shops, so daily life should be pretty convenient. When you get closer to your due date, I’ll help you find a good postnatal wellness center. You just focus on resting and taking care of yourself. Don’t worry about anything else,” Stella soothed.
Suzie paused. “Okay… Stella, when you have a minute, could you send me a list of what you spent on everything?”
“Oh, about that… Oliver wouldn’t let me pay for anything. The house, the yard, everything inside—he bought it all.”
Suzie felt even more indebted. “How much do you think it all cost?” she asked urgently.
“Why are you asking that?” Stella said dismissively. “This is a special time for you. Don’t worry about these things. You don’t have a job right now, so you need to save what little money you have for when the babies arrive.”
“No, Stella, I can’t,” Suzie insisted. “I’ve already caused you and Oliver so much trouble. I can’t let him spend his money on me too.”
Stella sighed. “You’re always so stubborn. But honestly, I doubt Oliver would take your money. He was willing to put his company and family on hold to take care of you. A man like that… Anyway, let’s not talk about it. How are you feeling? Have you had any other symptoms since the bleeding?”
