Hayden noticed that as Suzie hesitated, her gaze drifted down to her own belly. He guessed her concerns were about her current condition.
“I can wait,” he added quickly. “We can hire you after your child is born, and the salary will definitely be higher than the market rate. It’s just… you have the air of someone from a prominent family, and you have a nanny to assist you. I wasn’t sure if you’d even consider such a job.”
Seeing his sincerity, Suzie decided to be direct. “You’re too kind, Mr. Wycliffe. I’m not from any wealthy family, and I would be grateful for a job. The problem is, I probably won’t be free until my child is in school. I… I don’t have anyone to help me with childcare.”
Hayden waved a hand dismissively. “That’s an easy fix. If you don’t mind my humble studio, I can figure out the rest.”
He quickly added, “You have no idea what a stroke of luck it is to have found you. Ever since I opened the studio, finding digital photographers has been easy. But almost no one knows how to handle these old-fashioned cameras. I’ve interviewed countless people, and not a single one has met my standards. I desperately need a naturally gifted photographer like you.”
Suzie’s heart pounded. The money she had wasn’t a lot. She had meticulously recorded every penny Oliver had spent on her in a notebook. In her current state, Oliver would never accept repayment. But once the baby arrived, after she paid Oliver back, what was left would hardly be enough to raise a child. A job was crucial.
But there was another reason for her hesitation.
The studio was located in the most prosperous part of Mornhaven. In other words, it was very close to Baylor Group.
Perhaps sensing her unease, Hayden pressed on. “I’m sure you’re passionate about art. I truly hope you won’t refuse. And you can name your own salary. What do you want?”
Hayden felt deep down that Suzie was special. By appealing to her love for art, he was sure he could sway her. Plus, with the information he’d just learned—husband dead, no help with the baby—he was certain she needed the money.
