Watching him run off, Suzie glanced back toward the main road.
The taxi stand was overflowing with impatient crowds, and a shouting match had already broken out over an empty cab.
Across the street, the bus stop was packed so tightly there was barely room to breathe.
She let out a soft sigh and checked her phone again. Three percent battery.
Just as her anxiety threatened to boil over, the deafening roar of a motorcycle engine tore through the air.
"Put this on. Get on," Chester shouted.
Suzie didn't have time to look at him, let alone admire the sleek bike. She snatched the helmet, strapped it on, and swung her leg over the seat.
"Add me on a messaging app and send the location. I'll use the GPS. We'll be there in no time."
Suzie quickly unlocked her screen, pulled up her QR code, and held it out to him.
Once the address was set, Chester tossed a look over his shoulder.
"Hold onto my waist if you don't want to go flying off."
Suzie hesitated. She hated the physical contact, but she eventually complied.
True to his word, the speed was terrifying. It was Suzie's first time on a motorcycle, but right now, her mind was entirely consumed with getting to Oliver's house. Fear took a backseat.
The heavy bike wove through the congested traffic with expert precision.
However, at a major intersection, they got caught at an excruciatingly long red light.
Chester shouted through his helmet, "No matter how urgent it is, ninety seconds won't kill anyone—unless you're a doctor on an operating table."
Suzie didn't respond. The moment they stopped, she released her grip on his waist, sitting perfectly still, her eyes glazed over with grief.
Suddenly, Chester's voice came through clearly, though he didn't seem to be talking to her.
Chester quickly caught the hint. "Jamie, I've got an emergency. Let's catch up later!"
With that, he snapped his visor down and revved the engine.
In the split second before the motorcycle launched forward, Suzie cast one last fleeting glance at Jamie in the back seat.
Chester was one of his close friends. Back then, Chester had mistaken her for Suzanne. She had no idea if Chester had ever mentioned that mix-up to Jamie.
And she had no idea if Chester would bring up today's encounter the next time they grabbed drinks.
Regardless, it felt like a looming threat. Moving forward, she could bump into Jamie at any given moment.
The motorcycle finally pulled up to the gates of Oliver's sprawling suburban estate.
Suzie dismounted, pulled off the helmet, and handed it back to Chester. "You rear-ended my car, and now you helped me out," she said coolly. "We're even. Goodbye."
