The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 321

With the phone plugged into the charger, Suzie kept her finger pressed against the power button, panic written all over her face.

Chester couldn't help but ask, "Is there an emergency? Don't worry, it's a fast-charging cable. It should power up any second. Try letting go and pressing it again."

Suzie silently did as he suggested. The moment the startup logo appeared on the black screen, she held her breath in anticipation.

As soon as the home screen loaded, she immediately tapped her call log and dialed Oliver's number.

It rang and rang, but no one answered. Her anxiety spiking, she hung up and quickly called Stella instead.

The call connected almost instantly. "Suzie..." Stella choked out. "Helen... she's gone. She passed away at home."

Stella's sobbing pierced Suzie's heart like a needle. The hand clutching the phone trembled uncontrollably.

"I'm..." Suzie swallowed hard, tears welling. "I'm on my way."

Chester studied Suzie's bloodshot eyes and the fresh tears slipping down her pale cheeks. "What happened? Do you need my help?"

Before he even finished his sentence, Suzie grabbed her purse, ready to bolt.

He quickly caught her arm, reminding her, "Wait, Ms. Sterling, you haven't had your head CT scan yet. You can't just leave. If something happens to you later, I can't bear that responsibility."

Suzie turned back to him, her voice eerily calm. "I don't need you to take responsibility. I'm fine. We're done here."

Chester didn't let go. "No way. I rear-ended your car and caused your injury. Look, tell me where you need to go. I'll drive you there myself, and then you have to come back here with me for the CT. That's the only way I'll have peace of mind."

By now, Suzie's expression had darkened completely.

What was it with these men? Did Jamie love grabbing people and refusing to let them go so much that even his friends acted the exact same way?

She didn't have the time or energy to argue with him.

Wiping away her tears, Suzie directly flagged down a passing nurse and the attending doctor, her tone dead serious.

Stepping out of the hospital lobby, Suzie scanned the swarming crowd.

It was a nightmare. There were more people here than at a downtown shopping mall on a weekend.

She paused, looking at the man who had stopped right beside her. "What, can you fly?" she asked coldly.

Chester chuckled at the remark, then snapped his fingers.

"You guessed it."

Without another word, he grabbed her arm and led her toward the side of the hospital grounds.

Only a few hundred feet away, he stopped in front of a high-end motorcycle service shop.

"Wait here. Give me one minute."
