"It's been over between us for four years. What exactly is the point of harassing me like this?"
His large hand began to map the curve of her waist, the pressure of his touch shifting between gentle caresses and possessive grips. "You think it's over just because you say it is?" he replied coolly.
"If you can't have a rational conversation, then we have absolutely nothing to talk about. Let me out!" she demanded, bucking against his hold.
He narrowed his eyes at the fiery, defiant woman in his arms. She really had changed. The transformation went all the way down to her bones.
This wasn't how he planned to handle things. He hadn't waited in the dark garage just to start a war with her.
But the moment he saw her, all the bitter resentment over how methodically she had hidden from him rushed to the surface, completely obliterating his self-control.
His gaze roamed over her features, his brow furrowing slightly. "Just tell me," he coaxed, his tone softening. "Why did you leave? Why did you hide?"
Closing her eyes for a brief second, she turned her head to look right at him. "Listen closely. Four years ago, we went our separate ways. I left because I didn't love you anymore. And I hid because I was sick of being a prisoner in that suffocating house."
Having said her piece, she braced her hands on his shoulders to climb off his lap. "I'm done talking. Now unlock the door."
She barely lifted herself an inch before he yanked her right back down. "Don't love me?" he challenged. "Then who do you love? Where the hell have you been hiding?"
She gave him a freezing glare. The implication was obvious—he thought she had run off with another man.
She should have known he'd resort to insulting her.
Yet, his questions confirmed something crucial: he genuinely didn't know where she had been. He hadn't managed to dig up any real intel. Had Chester really kept his mouth shut about the woman named Suzanne?
Shoving her suspicions aside, she answered smoothly, "The man from the photograph. The one from four years ago."
"Oh? What's his name?" Jamie asked, sounding more bored than furious, as if they were discussing the weather.
Her unease deepened, a knot of anxiety twisting in her gut. But she had already dug this grave; she had to keep lying.
Averting her gaze to the darkened tinted window, she cleared her throat and infused her voice with genuine affection. "That's none of your business. All you need to know is that we got married. We've built a beautiful, happy family together..."
"A family? Who else besides you?"
His deep, resonant voice dropped an octave. His razor-sharp gaze drifted down, locking onto her flat stomach. "You mean... kids?"
