Hayden shook his head, completely perplexed. The thought triggered another memory. "Wait, what about the second test? You mentioned he ordered a retest. Did you ever find out the results?"
Suzie frowned. "I could never figure that out. I left before the second set of results came in. I genuinely have no idea what it said."
"Well, he definitely knows," Hayden reasoned. "I saw the news this morning. He made a huge public appearance at the Cross family memorial yesterday. Did you two run into each other?"
Suzie shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
They had run into each other, but he had barely spoken to her.
For a brief moment at the cemetery, his cold silence had made her believe he had finally given up on her.
She had assumed his ego was too bruised from her running away, and that after failing to track her down, he had simply moved on.
During the day, standing by the grave, she really thought the nightmare was over.
But then came the parking garage last night.
Suzie gave a slow, hesitant nod.
She gave Hayden a brief rundown of their encounter at the cemetery, intentionally leaving out the highly inappropriate incident in the parking garage.
"Based on how he acted," Hayden analyzed, "what is your gut feeling about that second paternity test?"
Suzie was just as clueless.
If the second test had revealed the truth, Jamie would have demanded to know where the children were last night.
But he had not asked a single question about them. If the second test was also wrong, leaving him to believe he wasn't the father, then why was he still looking into her life?
Her mind felt like a tangled mess. She did not want to play his psychological games. Her only concern was keeping her children safe.
She refused to be a burden anymore. She had to fight her own battles.
Jamie was a dangerous man. When he snapped, he destroyed anyone in his path without a second thought.
"I need you to promise me something," Suzie said firmly. "Stay completely out of anything involving Jamie. I will handle him myself. If we end up in court, I will take you up on that lawyer recommendation, but that is it."
Hayden stepped closer, looking down at her with serious eyes.
"If you truly feel nothing for him, and your only fear is a custody battle, there is a very simple solution. We just tell the press I am the father."
Suzie's eyes widened. She shook her head vehemently.
"Absolutely not. Your girlfriend, Alice Quinn, is flying back into the country soon. I already felt guilty enough when you put your arm around me at the airport to block the paparazzi. Alice might be understanding, but I refuse to cross that line."
