Suzie realized there was no room for negotiation. He only knew coercion and bribery, not compromise.

She paused, slowly gathering the documents on the table into a neat pile and gripping them in her hand.

She stood up slowly. As she walked silently past him, Jamie suddenly grabbed her wrist, his voice turning hoarse.

"Suzie..."

"Let go." Suzie tried to pull away with all her might but couldn't break his grip. She didn't lash out in anger, nor did she struggle further.

She simply met his gaze, her eyes utterly cold.

"Suzie... there are some things I think we need to sit down and talk about," Jamie said, his tone negotiative, the look in his lowered eyes filled with a soft light.

Suzie frowned slightly. Why this expression? Why this tone?

Faced with a woman who had supposedly cheated on him, shouldn't he be furious? Violent?

Suzie glared at him coldly, then at the hand gripping her wrist, and commanded again,

"Let go."

This time, Jamie paused for a few seconds before slowly releasing her.

Suzie shook her wrist and pointedly wiped it with a tissue before saying in a chilly voice,

"Mr. Baylor... I don't care what your intentions are today, nor what act you're trying to put on. But let me be perfectly clear: I am not here to beg you, and I certainly won't trade anything of mine with you."

She waved the documents in her hand and continued,

"Even though Mr. Wycliffe signed off on this project, I am fully in charge of it now. You know better than anyone how joint liability works. I will fight this lawsuit with everything I have. If I lose, as a member of Timefly Studio, I will stand or fall with the company I rely on."

Having said her piece, Suzie turned and headed for the door. Just as her hand touched the doorknob, Jamie's voice, still gentle, came from behind her.

Suzie looked at him in confusion as Jamie spoke again.

"I want to know why this means so much to you. Who gave it to you?"

Perhaps fearing she wouldn't answer, he added,

"This is the last question for today. Answer it, and I'll consider dropping the lawsuit. And just to be clear, this isn't a threat. It's a negotiation."

Suzie was even more bewildered. What was he playing at now?

With something as huge as the lawsuit as leverage, shouldn't he be exacting a brutal revenge on her?

She eyed the box in his hand and replied calmly,

"A negotiation? That's a nice way of putting it. If I don't answer, does that mean I don't get the necklace back?"
