Suzie stood perfectly straight, her eyes utterly devoid of emotion as she looked at him. Her red lips parted to deliver a chilling response. "Are you finished, Mr. Baylor?"
Jamie frowned at her icy demeanor, though his voice remained gentle. "If she ever returns to the country, we can still press charges. Lexi's statement can be used as evidence."
Suzie let out a soft laugh, her slender fingers gracefully tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Oh? Is that so? I've already recorded her confession, so there's no need to trouble yourself. I'd hate for you to see your precious damsel in distress crying again, soften your heart, and accidentally let her 'flee' the country a second time."
Her tone was mocking, her eyes gleaming with disdain and sarcasm. Glancing toward the crowded room, she added dismissively, "The party seems lively. Be a good gentleman and step aside."
Jamie stared at the stunning, aloof woman in front of him, feeling the intoxicating pull growing stronger by the second.
He forced his gaze to stay above the plunging neckline of her dress, respectfully focusing on the delicate straps resting against her collarbones. Her flawless porcelain skin was so exposed that it took everything in him not to strip off his own shirt and wrap it around her.
More than anything, he didn't want to let her go.
A venue like this was crawling with predators looking for an easy target. A woman as breathtaking as her wandering around was incredibly dangerous.
Suppressing his dominating instincts, he raised an eyebrow, a smile playing in his magnetic voice. "And if I don't?"
"If you don't, I guarantee you'll be the top trending news story tomorrow," she replied smoothly. "And what kind of scandal that will be depends entirely on my mood."
"Since when did you learn to threaten people?" His tone was practically a whisper, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
Watching him, Suzie felt like she was looking at a stranger.
Aside from their brief encounter in the parking garage, everything from the restaurant to the cafe, to this very moment... he was nothing like the man he used to be.
It all happened so fast she was still trying to process it.
"Suzie, Jamie is completely out of his mind," Stella muttered in shock.
After staring blankly for a few seconds, Suzie quickly pulled her friend away, grumbling as they walked, "I never should have gone over there."
"Yeah, well, I saw you recording it, so at least we got something out of it," Stella agreed. "But... it seems like he..."
She leaned in, raising an eyebrow with a sly smirk. "I have to say, seeing you handle him like that? Damn, girl. Calling it a total rebirth is an understatement."
She winked and continued.
