Suzie vividly remembered the night at the Baylor Manor when the police had taken Lexi away. Chloe had fallen to her knees, begging Jamie. What exactly was she begging for? He knew better than anyone.

Hearing the intimate nickname and his nauseatingly gentle tone felt like watching someone hide a dagger behind a smile.

Suzie shot him a glacial look. "This was already resolved years ago. Someone just went out of their way to bury it. What's the point of digging it up now?"

The abrupt dismissal left both Jamie and Lexi baffled, but Stella understood perfectly.

She sprang to her feet. "Let's go."

Before they could even step off the platform, Jamie quickly moved to block their path.

"Suzie..."

His relaxed demeanor was gone, replaced by a complex, heavy gaze. He spoke in an incredibly soft tone. "I suspected something was wrong back then, but I had no proof. I tried to convince her to turn herself in—I've told you all this before. By the time I had Aaron investigate further, she had already fled the country."
