Soon after, the doctor and a nurse hurried into the room. After a brief examination and a few standard questions, the doctor advised her to stick to light meals. She would need one more IV drip in the morning, and barring any complications, she'd be cleared for discharge by tomorrow afternoon.

Once the medical staff left, Jamie walked over to the door. From her spot on the bed, Suzie watched him pull out his phone, seemingly sending a text to someone.

A moment later, he turned and headed back toward her. Suzie quickly leaned her head back against the pillows and closed her eyes, feigning sleep.

"Drink some warm water. You need to stay hydrated," his smooth, deep voice drifted over her.

Suzie opened her eyes slightly to see him hovering near her, holding a glass of water.

She pursed her lips, her tone perfectly flat. "Where's Stella? I specifically remember calling her. Why did you show up in Emerald Village?"

Jamie carefully placed the glass on the bedside table. "Her company had an emergency, so she had to head back. She went all the way to Baylor Group looking for you, assuming I had taken you... and then you happened to call her while she was there."

Seeing that Suzie's expression remained unreadable, he added, "She was in a frantic rush. It must have been a massive crisis. Given how late it was getting, she asked me to stay and look after you."

Suzie frowned slightly at the explanation. It was true that Stella's job was erratic—major PR disasters could drop out of the sky at any moment, sometimes requiring her to fly out immediately. But even so, Stella would never willingly hand her over to Jamie.

Had Stella truly been so desperate and out of options that she had to compromise?

After a long silence, Suzie shot him a cool glance. "I'm awake now. You can go."

With that, she shifted her weight and deliberately turned her back to him.

But the room remained quiet, save for the faint rustle of clothing as he sat back down in the chair. He wasn't leaving.
