A moment later, the tray table was pulled across Suzie's lap. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Jamie's large hands methodically open each container and arrange them before her.
"You've been asleep for nearly a whole day. Eat something first," his soothing voice murmured near her ear.
Was she hungry?
She had woken up absolutely ravenous. She hadn't had a single bite of food since the previous evening. The last time she had experienced this kind of hollow, clawing hunger was back when she was a child.
The aroma of the food made her stomach rumble in protest. Though the dishes—a delicate soup, some steamed vegetables, and soft rice—were deliberately mild, to someone starving, it looked like a Michelin-starred feast.
While she hesitated, Jamie picked up the container of rice and handed it to her. "Eat. You need to keep your strength up."
Before Suzie could react, Jamie had already scooped up a piece of shrimp with his silverware, holding it up toward her lips. "You can only handle light meals right now," he said softly. "Let me feed you."
Suzie raised her hand, using the back of her wrist to physically push his arm away. "I can eat by myself," she said coldly.
As Suzie picked at her food, Jamie took a spoon and carefully skimmed the broth of her soup, gently blowing on it to cool it down.
Despite his efforts, Suzie ignored the soup entirely, opting to eat a bowl of steamed egg custard instead.
Jamie didn't push the issue. He eventually drank the soup himself and picked at a few of the remaining dishes alongside her.
They ate in total silence. It wasn't until Suzie finally felt full that she set down her fork.
Her gaze drifted to the side table, landing on a neatly coiled charging cable that matched her phone. She quietly slipped out of bed, pulled her phone from her purse, and plugged it in.
