Suzie blinked, needing a moment to anchor herself in the present. After a pause, she asked in a hauntingly quiet voice, "Four years ago... why did you let Chloe off the hook?"
Jamie froze. The question threw him off balance. He didn't interpret it as an angry interrogation, nor did he expect her to bring up ancient history so casually.
Given how thoroughly she had iced him out, he assumed she would only confront him about the past if she were actually considering getting back together with him. But right now, she was clearly repulsed by his presence—or rather, she didn't even care enough to actively repel him.
So... could it be...?
Instead of answering, Jamie's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Did she come after you yesterday? What did she do to you?! Is she the reason you were left in that state?!"
Suzie stared at him, bewildered by how his brain operated. She had merely learned some new information and wanted to verify it with him, yet he had instantly jumped to the most violent conclusion.
But deciding to play along, she replied with forced indifference, "So what if it was her? It's not like she hasn't bullied me like that before."
She shifted to look at him, her gaze cool and detached.
The moment the words left her mouth, a vein pulsed angrily at Jamie's temple. The alarm in his eyes morphed into a terrifying, razor-sharp fury.
"If she touched you," Jamie said, his voice completely devoid of theatrical yelling, yet dripping with a venomous, bone-chilling darkness, "she will never know another day of peace."
Before Suzie could respond, Jamie shot up from his chair. Placing a hand on the mattress, he leaned over her, his eyes scanning her face intensely. "What exactly did she do to you? You were sleeping so heavily today that I didn't want the doctors prodding you too much. Are you injured anywhere else?"
His eyes darted over her body as if searching for hidden bruises.
Sensing he was a second away from pulling back the blankets to physically check her himself, Suzie quickly clarified, "It wasn't her."
