When she still didn't react, he kept his tone patient, gently urging her. "You might not realize how serious this could be. This is a matter of your safety. Even if you don't care about yourself, you have to think about the kids. If someone is scheming against you, what happens to them if something goes wrong?"
A sudden chill crept up Suzie's spine at his words.
She frowned deeply, her mind rewinding to the events of the previous day...
Perhaps it was because she had slept so long to sleep off the fever, or maybe because she had caught a bad chill last night, but the moment she tried to focus, a dull, throbbing ache pulsed in her temples.
She slowly climbed back into bed, shifting until she found a somewhat comfortable position against the pillows.
Thinking back on it now, she was actually quite shaken by how close she had flown to the sun.
It all started when she had walked out into the parking garage yesterday. As she was about to unlock her car, two men had stepped out of the shadows.
Initially, she thought she was being mugged or abducted, but the men had been incredibly polite. They explained they were there on behalf of Lionel Lockwood, extending a formal invitation to meet.
Hearing Lionel's name instantly made Suzie think of Chloe. She figured it might be the perfect opportunity to pry some information out of him.
From what she knew, Lionel had just confirmed that Chloe wasn't his biological daughter. That discovery had led him straight to Margaret. And judging by Margaret's desperate move to fake Suzie's death, it was obvious Margaret had swapped the babies all those years ago.
But the swapped children didn't seem to be just her and Chloe—there was a bizarre missing link in the timeline that didn't add up.
Suzie had just picked up her DNA results from Mornhaven Forensics & Genetics Center, but she assumed Lionel didn't know yet that she wasn't his biological daughter either. Otherwise, why would he summon a complete stranger?
He clearly believed she was his long-lost child. Capitalizing on that assumption, Suzie decided to meet him, hoping to extract whatever details he had uncovered at the hospital where Margaret had orchestrated the swap. If he had solid leads, she could use them to finally track down her real parents.
