She wanted to ask him what was wrong, but she swallowed the words. Noticing the IV bag was nearly empty, she reached over and pressed the call button instead.

A nurse quickly bustled in, swapped out the bag for the final medication, and hurried out.

Jamie stood silently by the bed for a moment before pacing over to the other side of the room divider. He stayed there until the last drop of fluid was gone and the nurse returned to remove the needle.

As the nurse taped a cotton ball over the injection site, she reminded them to apply pressure. Without hesitating, Jamie wrapped his hand over Suzie's, pressing firmly against her skin.

The moment the nurse left, Suzie used her free hand to push his away. "I can do it myself," she said coolly. "And please, have them send me the final bill."

"Keep the pressure steady, or it'll bruise," his voice was frustratingly calm. "Just give it a minute."

Ignoring him, she pulled her hand free and pressed down on the cotton ball herself.

"Suzie, there's something I need to tell you, but I need you not to panic," he said, straightening up. His tone was careful, meant to soothe.

She shot him a sharp look. He had been acting strange ever since he checked his phone earlier. Had he just been waiting for her IV to finish? What could possibly be bad enough to make her panic?
