"They didn't have the brand you used to like, so I grabbed a few different ones. See which one works best. There are dry tissues and wet wipes in here too."
Jamie leaned into the car, organizing the bags and explaining each one.
"I asked the clerk; there's no public restroom around here. It's just a tiny mart. But they had a small clothing section, so I bought some loungewear and underwear. You can change in the car. Put your soiled clothes in this empty bag here, and I brought an extra trash bag for the rest..."
Suzie was entirely speechless.
In all the years she had known Jamie Baylor, she had never heard him ramble on about something so mundane.
He actually remembered her preferred brand of tampons? When had he ever paid attention to something like that?
And her cramps... Martha was the only one who knew how badly she suffered from them. How did he know?
Everything in these three bags was exactly what she desperately needed right now. Since when had he become so terrifyingly attentive?
While Suzie sat there in a daze, Jamie climbed back into the driver's seat. He reached up and pulled down every single privacy curtain that covered the rear windows.
"Just knock on the glass when you're done," he said softly.
Then, he got out of the car, shutting the door behind him.
Suzie looked at the completely blacked-out interior. Her embarrassment hadn't faded one bit.
Was she really supposed to take her pants off in here?
But they were out in the suburbs. The fact that they had found a store at all was a miracle. She truly had no other options.
Suzie tentatively peeled back a tiny corner of the left window curtain. Jamie was standing a fair distance away, smoking a cigarette. He looked just as handsome as he had years ago, but now there was a mature, commanding edge to him that made him even more magnetic.
She quickly dropped the curtain and began to change. For some inexplicable reason, her mind drifted to Crystal Solomon, the woman she had bumped into at the amusement park.
Crystal had called him 'Jamie' so intimately. Back in the day, even Suzie rarely used his first name so casually.
