"Suzie, I am going to bring you back to me. I will protect you until the day I die."
With that absolute vow, Jamie strode out of the apartment, the door clicking shut behind him.
Suzie sat frozen on the entryway bench for a long time, only snapping out of her daze when Zelina and Wilna returned with the children.
"Ms. Sterling, you're home early!" Zelina greeted her warmly. "The kids were begging to go out, so we took them down to play in the courtyard for a bit."
"Thank you. I appreciate it," Suzie said. She spent a few minutes playing with the kids before turning back to the housekeepers. "I'm not feeling very well today, so I'm leaving the kids in your hands for the evening."
After showering and taking a painkiller, Suzie retreated to her bedroom to rest.
Around eleven o'clock that night, the video doorbell system in the living room began to chime incessantly.
Zelina, rubbing her sleepy eyes, hurried out to answer it. Unsure of what to do, she eventually went and knocked softly on Suzie's bedroom door.
"Ms. Sterling? It's the building security. Are you feeling any better?"
Inside, Suzie had just awoken from a horrific nightmare. She had dreamt she was trapped in a roaring fire with no way out, while her children sobbed hysterically on the other side of a glass door. A few cold tears were still clinging to her eyelashes.
Wiping her face, Suzie dragged herself out of bed and opened the door. "I'm feeling a bit better. What's wrong, Zelina?"
Zelina looked worried. "Security is on the intercom. I haven't hung up yet. They want to speak with you."
Suzie walked out to the living room and looked at the security guard on the video panel. "Hello. What's going on?"
The guard replied with utmost politeness. "Ms. Sterling, during our night patrol, we found a man loitering in the hallway on your floor. When we questioned him, he claimed to be a friend of yours. We asked him to leave so as not to disturb the other residents, but he refused. We need to know how you'd like us to proceed..."
