"Open it and see how it smells. If you don't like this particular scent, I'll have him blend a new one for you," Jamie said.
Seeing that Suzie made no move to open it, Jamie reached over, removed the lid himself, and lifted the box right beneath her nose. "Smell it. If you hate it, it means the formula isn't right for you."
Suzie hesitated, but as she inhaled, a subtle, uniquely calming fragrance filled her senses. It was instantly soothing, washing a wave of peace over her. The scent was incredibly refined—something no luxury perfume or high-end aromatherapy oil could ever replicate. From that alone, she knew this balm was virtually priceless.
Suzie gently pushed his hand away, refusing him with cold politeness. "I'm not really a fan of scented things. Take it back. You don't need to have him make another one."
But the second the words left her mouth, Jamie stood up and walked straight toward her bedroom.
Panicking, Suzie immediately jumped up and chased after him.
She wanted to yell at him to stop, but she was terrified of waking the housekeepers.
She followed Jamie all the way to her bed, watching helplessly as he set the ceramic box directly on the edge of her pillow. He turned to her, his voice low and instructive. "You don't need to light it. Just leaving it by your pillow is enough."
"I just told you," Suzie hissed, keeping her voice to a furious whisper, "I don't like it."
Jamie straightened up and slowly closed the distance between them. He didn't stop until he was mere inches away, staring down into her eyes.
"When you smelled it just now, your expression said you loved it. Didn't it?"
Suzie was speechless.
