By the door, Mia stood completely pale, urgently gesturing for Suzie.
Sensing something was wrong, Suzie kept her composure. Thankfully, Eleanor wasn't looking toward the entrance. With a soft smile, she said, "Mom, this is the kids' social media account. Take a look. I'll be right back, and after work, I'll take you home to meet them."
As Suzie got up and headed for the door, Hayden noticed the shift in her demeanor and immediately followed.
Mia was clutching a cardboard box, her voice trembling to a whisper. "Suzie... Mr. Wycliffe... you both need to see this."
Suzie exchanged an uneasy glance with her assistant. Having worked together for years, she knew Mia well. Unless she was genuinely terrified, her eyes wouldn't be blown wide open with panic.
Sensing the dark shift in the atmosphere, Hayden stepped in. He smoothly took the box from Mia, shielding it from Suzie's view, and cracked the lid. A single glance was enough. He snapped it shut instantly, forcing a relaxed smile. "It's nothing. Just a stupid prank. Go back and keep Mom company. I'll handle this."
Suzie frowned. "What is it? Let me see."
Hayden lifted the box out of her reach. "There's nothing to see. Be good and go back inside. Mom's probably watching those videos and dying to talk to you about them."
With gentle force, he pushed Suzie back toward her office. The door cracked open, and Eleanor happily called out her daughter's name. Left with no choice, Suzie yielded and stepped back inside to join her mother.
Hayden pulled the door completely shut. He turned to Mia, his expression hardening. "Take me to an empty room."
