Stella frowned, nodding slowly. "Looks like he's finally backing off. That's for the best. It saves you the headache of fighting him for custody down the line. Besides, you've found your real family now, and the kids are absolute angels. Once this whole media circus blows over, you've got a bright, happy future ahead. Look at him—he’s all alone. You're the one who actually won."

Suzie took her friend's hand. "You don't have to try so hard to make me feel better, Stella. I'm honestly fine. I meant every word I said to him that night."

Stella paused, searching Suzie's face. "You really never considered giving him another chance?"

"No." Suzie sighed. "I know he's changed a lot. With everything that's happened lately, I can't fault how he's treated me. But... there are still things you don't know about, things I just can't get past. Please, let's just leave it at that."

She stared blankly at the hardwood floor. Stella didn't know about Jamie dragging her to the hospital against her will. Suzie had only confided in Chester about that nightmare; she didn't want to burden Stella, and she had no intention of ever bringing it up again.

Seeing her friend zone out, Stella's tone softened. "He really did a number on you, didn't he? Whatever you decide, I've got your back. All I care about is that you and the kids are happy."
