Julian was just reaching into the backseat to grab the expensive health supplements he had bought when he saw her marching out. He paused, grabbed a thick woolen shawl instead, and walked over to drape it securely around her shoulders.
His voice was impossibly gentle. "Why didn't you put on a coat?"
Clara's nose was already bright red from the freezing wind, and she was shivering, but she detested this sudden display of intimacy. She stepped sideways, dodging the shawl entirely.
Her voice was ice. "Julian, stop doing this. We broke up. Do you genuinely not understand what that means?"
Julian stood there, staring down at her. His eyes were as dark as midnight ink, and he said absolutely nothing.
Clara looked away, pushing harder. "Don't come back here. If people see us together, it will trigger rumors. It'll damage your reputation."
She knew exactly how to hit him. Julian was obsessed with his public image and corporate standing. Hearing this would definitely make him back off.
Instead, the man's response shattered her reality.
"Then let them see. I don't care. We're going to go public anyway!"
Public?
The word detonated in Clara's brain like a live grenade.
For a full two seconds, she was utterly paralyzed.
No woman on earth wanted to be treated like a dirty secret.
It was agonizingly humiliating.
Back when they first got together, she had practically begged him to go public. Watching normal couples hold hands openly on the street while they were forced to sneak around in the shadows had broken her heart a thousand times over.
But in the end, convinced by his arguments about corporate stability, stock prices, and media blowback, she had swallowed her agony and hidden herself away.
Now, hot tears flooded Clara's eyes. She wasn't crying because she was weak; she was crying for the pathetic, desperate girl she used to be.
Julian stepped into her personal space, his large, incredibly warm hands swallowing hers entirely. His voice dropped to a low, pleading whisper. "Clara, I am dead serious. Give me one chance, and I will announce us to the world."
Clara aggressively sniffled, fighting violently to keep her composure as she ripped her hands out of his grip.
"Julian, maybe you really mean it right now. But loving someone takes actual courage."
"I am not that blindly devoted, passionate little girl anymore. I have no desire to fly blindly into the fire just to burn alive again."
"Leave. And don't ever come back."
"Clara, please. Just one chance?"
Julian felt a physical stab of panic at the absolute finality in her eyes. It looked as if, once she walked away today, she would erase him from her existence forever.
Unable to stop himself, he lunged forward, trapping her against the frozen metal of the Maybach, caging her in with his massive frame.
He bowed his head, resting his forehead against hers, his voice shaking with a terrifying, desperate tenderness.
"Give me a chance. Just one chance... I swear on my life, I will never let anyone hurt you again!"
His overwhelming, aggressive masculine scent completely suffocated her. Clara's face burned with panic as she twisted frantically against him. "We are done! Let me go—"
Finally, she managed to duck under his rigid arm and sprinted toward the building, throwing one last scream over her shoulder: "Stay away from here!"
Julian's brow drew into a vicious knot. He stared at her fleeing silhouette, the knuckles of the hand gripping the roof of the Maybach turning bone-white.
Her absolute revulsion tore through him like jagged glass. It made him realize, with sickening clarity, that he couldn't even remember the last time she had willingly wrapped her arms around him.
Did she really find his touch that repulsive now?
Julian's face tightened in raw defeat. So this was what it felt like to be ruthlessly, repeatedly rejected.
