Clara couldn't help feeling a pang of disappointment, but assuming he was probably stuck in a meeting, she brushed it off and caught a cab home.
Half an hour later, the car pulled up to the gates of the Pelican Bay estate.
Stepping out, Clara gazed up at the luxurious property, overwhelmed by emotion.
Not too long ago, she had walked away from here completely disillusioned, and now, she was back.
She hoped that this time, happiness would last a lifetime.
Clara lowered her eyes, a soft smile playing on her lips, and walked inside.
The moment she walked through the door, she heard a sharp "Meow!" A little tabby kitten sprinted over, wrapping its paws around her ankle and playfully gnawing at it. It didn't bite hard at all; it was just curious and wanted to play.
Before long, the other two kittens trotted over as well. One was the little white kitten she had met before, and the other was black and white. The two furballs practically danced around her feet.
They were absolutely adorable.
Clara's heart melted completely. She crouched down and scooped up all three of them.
The kittens seemed to catch a whiff of Julian's scent on her, so they weren't afraid in the slightest. They meowed at her, and the little white one boldly nuzzled its face into her chest.
Smiling, Clara couldn't resist pressing a kiss to its head, earning an affectionate lick on her cheek in return.
Susan, who had been cleaning the living room, heard the commotion and came over. Seeing it was Clara, her face lit up with surprise.
"Oh my, Clara! Why didn't you let me know you were coming? I would have prepared everything!"
Dropping her cleaning supplies, she hurried over, trying to shoo the kittens away. "Look at you guys, being all friendly."
The three kittens protested with annoyed meows and swiped their paws at her.
Clara laughed. "It's fine, I love them. You go back to what you were doing, Susan. I'm going to head upstairs and freshen up."
Susan hesitated, watching Clara carry the kittens up the stairs, clearly wanting to say something.
