The man must have come straight from the airport. He hadn't even gone home first, still dressed in a formal, impeccably tailored suit that accentuated his handsome, commanding presence.
"You..." Clara Vance's heart surged, genuinely surprised.
She hadn't expected him to return early. Last night on WeChat, he had told her he wouldn't be back for another two days.
Julian Lowell smiled. Setting the fruit platter on the table, he stepped closer and affectionately brushed her cheek. "It's your family's birthday celebration. Of course I had to come back."
Clara's heartstrings tugged. Looking at his gentle face, a sudden lump formed in her throat.
This was the first time he had ever attended a birthday for her family. In past years, he wouldn't even show up, usually just having someone send a gift.
But not wanting to expose her vulnerability, she sniffled, turned her head slightly, and whispered, "Thank you..."
Instead of replying, Julian pulled her into his arms. Surprise flickered in Clara's eyes as his warm, large hand gently stroked her back. "I was wrong before. From now on, whatever you want to do, I'll be right by your side."
Clara stiffened, a slight tremble washing over her. The unexpected tenderness made her eyes prick with tears. Yielding to the moment, she instinctively gripped his shirt, pressing her cheek against his chest.
Julian gazed down at her, a faint smirk curving his lips.
They didn't pull apart until Rosalie and Miles came out of the bedroom.
Her cheeks flushed, Clara quickly greeted her sister.
Julian remained completely unfazed, showing no sign of awkwardness as he helped unpack the cake Clara had bought and placed it on the dining table.
Rosalie, having been around the block, instantly knew what they had just been doing. She cleared her throat softly, choosing not to call them out. "I'll go bring out the food. We can eat now."
Clara looked puzzled. "Rosalie... where is he? Is he not home? Or is he drinking again?"
Rosalie sighed and headed into the kitchen. "Zane had some business and went out today. Let's just ignore him."
Went out?
Hadn't he been paranoid these past few days, constantly claiming someone was following him and refusing to leave the house?
Clara found it completely bizarre.
Julian glanced at her, pulling out a chair and gesturing for her to sit. "What's on your mind?"
Snapping back to reality, Clara looked at him. "Nothing... I'll go help bring out the food!"
"Sit. I'll do it."
Julian gently pressed her shoulders down and strode into the kitchen.
Seeing this, Miles trotted over with a cheeky grin. "Uncle Julian is so good to you, Clara!"
