Julian was thoroughly teased. Seeing her stir the fire and casually try to walk away, he lunged forward, hooking an arm around her and dragging her back against his chest.
"Ah..." Clara let out a soft yelp.
Julian gripped her waist firmly. "I'll let you off the hook today, but next time, you won't get away so easily."
Blushing furiously, Clara complained, "That hurts!"
Julian let out a low hum. He knew she was exaggerating, but he relaxed his grip anyway and stroked her hair. Just as he was about to speak,
the phone on the nightstand started ringing.
Julian frowned.
Clara nudged him. "Go answer it..."
Julian shot her a look before reluctantly letting her go to grab his phone.
It was Arthur.
He answered, keeping it off speakerphone and pressing it to his ear. "What is it?" he asked coolly.
"Boss, we have a problem. You know that project you gave Ms. Vance? Sera somehow found out about it and went straight to the client. The client seems quite taken with her, and now, it looks like Sera might be joining the design team too!"
This was an absolute disaster waiting to happen.
Julian's face darkened.
Clara waited quietly nearby. She couldn't hear the conversation, but seeing his grim expression, she stepped closer and gently tugged on the hem of his shirt, silently mouthing, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
Julian looked down into her clear, concerned eyes, the darkness in his own gaze deepening.
He muttered a quick "Got it, we'll talk later" to Arthur and hung up. Pulling Clara into his arms, he patted her shoulder and kept his tone perfectly casual.
"It's nothing. Just a minor issue at the company. I have to go in and handle it, so I can't stay for breakfast. Go eat with your sister."
Clara didn't suspect a thing; she knew how busy he was. "It's fine, go ahead."
Julian did indeed need to rush off to clean up this messy situation, but before leaving, he made sure to placate her.
"I'll come pick you up for dinner later."
Caressing her cheek, he added softly, "If you're free this morning, you should go to the house and check on the kittens."
He had actually kept the kittens at the villa?
She had assumed that even if he kept them, he would stick them in one of his other properties, not the house he actually lived in.
Delight danced in Clara's eyes.
Julian's eyes narrowed slightly, instantly reading her thoughts. He brushed his thumb against the corner of her mouth. "Anything you love, I will slowly learn to accept."
Clara's heart skipped a beat. She threw her arms around him, rubbing her cheek against his chest affectionately like a spoiled child.
She didn't see
the fleeting shadow that crossed the man's eyes.
He kissed her forehead, his voice raspy. "Alright, save the hugs for tonight. I need to get changed and head out. If I don't leave now, I'll be late."
