Back then, Anne was determined to join the rally race. As her mentor, Noelle needed to look out for her. No one could predict when accidents might happen in such a dangerous event. To keep Anne safe, Noelle protected her from attacks by other cars. However, during that race, Noelle injured her wrist.
Even though she went through countless rounds of therapy, her wrist still ached whenever it touched cold water or on damp, rainy days. After that car crash six years ago, she thought her hand was ruined forever. Luckily, fate showed her some mercy.
"From now on, don't say that thing again." Noelle did not want to bring up the past.
"Back then, I protected her not only because she was my student, but because she was part of our Solar Squad. As captain, it was both my duty and my right to keep everyone safe.
"As for six years ago, no matter what happened, I missed the meeting. That was my fault. Even if I had my reasons, I still broke the promise," she added. She turned to Hunter. "If we keep holding on to the past, we'll never move forward. Don't you agree?"
Hunter could see that Anne's coldness had cut deeply into her heart. But this was something between them, and he had no place to interfere. All he could do was quietly ache for her.
"I just want you to be happy," he said softly. "If anyone makes you unhappy, no matter who it is, I won't let them off easily." No exceptions, not even for someone who was once Noelle's student.
Noelle gave him a soft smile. She rose on her toes, pressed a light kiss to his forehead, and said with a smile, "Thank you, Hunter."
Even now, walking this path alone, she was not really by herself. She still had him by her side. That was enough. She felt content, even blessed.
…
The next day, light rain fell over Emberfield during the qualifying round, just as Anne predicted. Rainy weather made the track slick, testing both drivers and machines. The tuning data from yesterday had to be adjusted all over again.
When Noelle arrived at the venue, everyone was already there. People cast glances, subtle yet deliberate, at her wrist as if concerned about it.
Cassandra walked up to Noelle, feigning concern. "Ms. Quinn, is your hand all right today? If it hurts, I can ask the medical team to get you some ointment."
Soon, the qualifiers began. Noelle fastened her helmet and slid into the driver's seat. When the light turned green, her car shot forward like a hunting leopard. But not long after, she felt something was wrong with the car. The tires were loose.
Normally, they were always inspected before the start. A mistake like this should have been impossible. Yet the problem was real. Worse still, the next pit stop was still far away.
Noelle had planned to seize the lead position in this qualifier. Only with the best ranking could she secure tomorrow's advantage. But who would have thought that trouble would strike as soon as the car left the line?
The drizzle blurred her vision, while the sharp pain in her wrist throbbed to the bone. For a moment, she faltered. Could she truly never race again on the international stage? Did this mean she had to admit defeat?
At that instant, an image of Nicola's face flashed in her mind. She had promised to win the championship for her. The championship did not belong to her. It belonged to Nicola.
Her gaze fell to the cherry blossom hair tie wrapped around her wrist. Slamming her foot down, she pulled the car toward the nearest pit stop. She was betting everything on this. Her voice was hoarse yet resolute. "No one, and nothing, will stop me from getting back on that track!"
