"Ms. Quinn, please don't take this the wrong way. Since you and Hunter are together now, it's only right for me, as his older brother, to show some goodwill. I can see he truly cares about you, so I prepared a small gift as a token of sincerity."
Liam's manner was soft and seemingly sincere, but Noelle felt a faint disconnect, as though this version of him didn't match the one she knew.
At this moment, it was as if he had put on a mask.
Although she hadn't interacted with him much, the look in his eyes made her feel that his words weren't sincere.
Maybe she was overthinking it.
She told herself Liam was probably only trying to leave a good impression on Hunter, so he was deliberately offering a gift to win her over.
"Thank you for the gift."
Noelle didn't refuse him outright. "But Hunter and I are just dating. We're nowhere near the point of meeting family, and from what I've heard, things between you and him aren't very good. I don't want my boyfriend to misunderstand me because I'm in contact with you."
She pushed the gift back toward Liam. "I appreciate the thought, but I won't be accepting this."
A flicker of surprise crossed Liam's eyes.
He hadn't expected that a simple gesture, made before he even explained himself, would prompt Noelle to shut him down so directly.
Still, he maintained his polished demeanor. He managed a polite, slightly strained smile. "I know you and Hunter have your misunderstandings about the Haberkorn family and me. I'm stuck in the middle, and it isn't easy for me either. I want Hunter to come home, but I have no intention of forcing him. Ms. Quinn, I'm not here with any ulterior motives. I hope you won't view me as your opponent. I'm on Hunter's side."
Noelle smiled politely. "What happens within your family isn't my place to comment on. But if Hunter really wanted to go back, he wouldn't need anyone urging him. He'd do it himself. And Mr. Haberkorn, there's no need to push him into choosing," she said, making her position unmistakably clear.
She stood by Hunter, which meant she naturally defended him.
A sharp wave of bitterness surged in Liam's chest.
Why had their parents placed all their hopes on him, preparing him to lead the Haberkorns, yet never recognized his strengths? Why did they only pay attention to Hunter, the unruly one who refused to follow orders?
Behind his glasses, Liam's gaze grew darker.
Just then, Hunter's voice cut through the air. "If you need something, you can come to me. Why are you approaching my girlfriend instead?"
Liam got to his feet as soon as he saw him, masking his frustration with a bitter smile. "Hunter, you're misunderstanding. There's no need for this anger. I haven't done anything."
