Across the iron bars, Noelle let out a furious laugh. "Clifford, you were the one who insisted on taking full custody of Zayne back then. It's natural that I'll want to visit him when I'm free. Besides, I've been paying five thousand dollars in child support on time every month. You could get remarried with that amount of money."
Clifford clenched his fists. At that same time, Zayne reached out and blindly grasped the bars, his eyes unfocused. "Mom, where are you?"
Sensing something was wrong, Noelle ordered Juned to open the door.
Zayne's pupils were sluggish. It was as if he couldn't see her at all.
Noelle's heart lurched in terror. "Zayne? What happened to your eyes? Can you see me?"
She crouched in front of him, but his gaze never landed on her.
Something was wrong with him!
"Zayne's gone blind! He won't ever see again!"
Clifford snapped coldly, "Noelle, this is all your fault! You did this! If you hadn't insisted on a divorce, Zayne wouldn't have been neglected, and this wouldn't have happened to him!"
"Clifford Fuller!"
Hearing the commotion, Hunter had come out to see what was going on. Hearing Clifford's words, he couldn't restrain himself. He swung his fist and punched Clifford.
Clifford was no match for Hunter's strength. One punch sent him to the ground, and he stayed down for a long time.
Noelle looked at Zayne, her gaze filled with pain. "Zayne, you can't see Mommy, can you?"
Tears streamed down Zayne's face. "Mom, I was wrong. I shouldn't have left you. Mom, can you forgive me? Can you come home and live with Dad again?"
"No!"
Bonnie answered the question faster than Noelle could.
She burst into tears, tugging at Noelle's sleeve to keep Zayne from touching her. "She's my Mommy! You're the one who didn't want her anymore! You didn't want her—so you can't take my Mommy away!"
She hugged Noelle's leg, sobbing. "Mommy, don't go! I finally have a Mommy—don't go! Bonnie will be good and obedient from now on—Mommy, please stay with Bonnie!"
Seeing Bonnie's tear-streaked face, Noelle's heart twisted in pain.
She stroked Bonnie's head and bent to kiss her forehead. "I won't go. I will always be your Mommy."
She looked at Juned. "Take Bonnie inside."
Juned did as he was told, but Bonnie, terrified Noelle would leave, choked out as she wiped her tears, "Mommy, don't go..."
Juned could only forcefully carry Bonnie inside.
Noelle looked at Clifford, who finally got up.
Clifford's behavior already bordered on child abuse.
Zayne had been a healthy child, and now he'd become blind.
Even if she were truly cold-blooded, she couldn't just sit back and watch this happen.
She had given birth to Zayne and once cared for him like he was a treasure. But now, he was being tossed around like garbage.
How could Noelle accept that?
Clifford slunk away.
After he left, Zayne tugged at Noelle's clothes. "Mom, you really can't take me back and start over with Dad?"
He wanted to return to the past—days when his father earned money for the family and when his mother took care of him.
"No."
Though Noelle agreed to take Zayne in, she had no intention of being soft on him. Even a child should bear the consequences of his actions.
She looked at Hunter Haberkorn. "Sorry, I'll take him back to the apartment first. Please tell Bonnie that once I get him settled in, I'll come look for her."
