Too Good for You The Ex-Wife You Lost novel Chapter 238

"Since I'm telling you to take it, please do," Nancy said and pretended to be upset. "Otherwise, I'll assume you think my gift isn't good enough, and I won't invite you back again."

At that, Noelle no longer dared refuse. With Nancy putting it that way, Noelle insistently declining would only make her seem ungrateful.

She accepted the jewelry box with a smile. "In that case, I'll accept it. Thank you, Mrs. Haberkorn Senior."

"From now on, call me Grandma Nancy just like Hunter does. I hear you two are about the same age, so there's absolutely no need for such stiff formalities," Nancy said.

She glanced at Hunter and added, "This kid was so terrified I might eat you alive that he refused to bring you home. It's clear he treasures you like his most precious possession."

Noelle caught the hint of reproach in her tone and laughed softly. "That's on me, Grandma Nancy. Hunter and I haven't been together for long, so I didn't think about coming to visit sooner. Please don't be mad at him."

Nancy laughed along. "You're spoiling him already! Don't think I can't tell that you're making excuses for him!"

In truth, Noelle wasn't making excuses either. She and Hunter had confirmed their relationship in Emberfield, and soon after, she had left for Musgola for a race. There hadn't been any time to visit at all.

Hunter stepped in to smooth things over. "There, there, Grandma. Enough scolding."

Just then, the housekeeper came forward to refill their tea. "Mrs. Haberkorn Senior, the kitchen says lunch is ready. Shall we serve it now?"

Nancy waved a hand. "Yes. Bring it out."

Noelle found her surprisingly amiable and easy to get along with.

The lunch that followed passed in a fairly pleasant atmosphere.

In the afternoon, Nancy needed her nap and instructed Hunter to pick up fresh fruits from the orchard to bring home for Bonnie.

Hunter wanted to take Noelle along, but Nancy held her back. "Ms. Quinn has been keeping me company all morning, so she must be tired.

"Let's give her some rest. Nothing can possibly happen to her now that she's here."

Noelle sensed Nancy's intent to send Hunter away, so she smiled at him and said, "Go ahead. I'll stay and keep Grandma Nancy company."

Hunter had no choice but to leave.

Once he was gone, the kind smile on Nancy's face slowly faded. She turned to Noelle and said in a serious tone, "Ms. Quinn, I heard you were once poisoned, and that your body hasn't fully broken down the poison yet."

Chapter 238 Disparity in Status 2

Noelle felt her heart sink little by little.

She had deluded herself into thinking Nancy accepted her, yet never expected Nancy's warmth to be nothing more than a calculated facade.

"I understand you're saying this for Hunter's sake, but I'm sorry," Noelle calmly replied. "I can't make any promises, nor have I ever thought of treating this relationship with Hunter as just a fling."

Chapter 238 Disparity in Status 3

"Also, you said Hunter needs a virtuous wife, not a world champion…"

Noelle rose and announced, "But I'm going to be the world champion."

She had sacrificed and lost too much to come to this point, so she would never give up her path for a man.

As for Hunter, he had never told her that he was the head of the Haberkorns. She hadn't had any idea, and if she had, she might not have gotten together with him so easily.

As a free woman who had left her family and a family head bound by familial duties, there was an immense disparity between their identities.
