Chapter 102
Iris’s POV
Shane stayed silent, but to my relief, he still didn’t move.
Chloe scoffed. “This is getting a little bit repetitive, don’t you think?
Shane tilted his head, unfazed.
Chloe glared at him. “Do I need to remind you again that I am not someone you want on your bad side? Do I need to remind you again to know your place?”
Shane’s voice was steady when he finally spoke. “I’m simply following the Alpha’s orders. My job is to protect her from any harm or threat. That includes you.”
Chloe’s nostrils flared. “I am the future Luna. You dare stand against me?”
He gave a small shrug, completely unfazed. “I don’t take orders from ‘future’ anything. I obey the Alpha, the one who holds authority now, not the one you keep promising yourself you’ll become.”
Her friends shifted behind her with outrage on their faces, but Shane didn’t blink.
“Besides,” he added with a casual shrug, “you and I both know I’m already on your bad side. So what’s the point of your warning? I might as well do as I like and probably kill myself when you actually become Luna which may be never.”
I snorted before I could stop myself.
The girls behind Chloe glared daggers at us like they were ready to jump to her defense.
Chloe’s face flushed red, her jaw tightened as the smirk on her face faded. “You think you’re funny?” she snapped.
Shane shrugged. “No, just being honest.”
She took a step forward, her hand twitching at her side as if she wanted to hit Shane.
He lifted an eyebrow, and his voice dropped. “Here’s something you should have in mind, Chloe. I’m a pack warrior. One of the strongest. The only people who’ve ever beaten me are the Alpha, the Beta, and the Gamma. So trust me, Chloe. If you make a move right now, the only thing you’ll gain is injuring yourself.”
The steel in his voice was so heavy that there was no room for doubt. His eyes were firm. For the first time, Chloe actually hesitated.
The girls behind her glanced at each other, murmuring.
I crossed my arms. My legs ached and all I wanted to do was lay on my bed. “He’s right and you know it. So why don’t you do the right thing, and avoid causing unnecessary pain for

yourself?”
My words pissed her off even more. Her face twisted with fury, “You-”
But Shane stepped slightly forward, cutting her off. “Don’t even try it.”
Silence fell between us for a long time.
I could practically see the war in Chloe’s head. Her pride wanted her to lash out, Shane’s warning was the only thing holding her back.
Finally, she scoffed with a bitter look on her face as she stepped back.
“Fine,” she hissed. “But don’t think this is over.”
She shot a look of hatred at Shane. “I will make you regret standing against me.”
Then she turned away.
Her friends followed her, murmuring bitterly, and shooting glares back at us. Chloe’s fists were clenched, but she didn’t turn back. She stormed down the hallway.
I released a shaky breath. “Well. That was exhausting.”
“But it was entertaining, though,” Shane said with a small grin.
I scowled at him. “For you, maybe. I was so tired that I was so close to dropping dead on the stairs, and my heart was racing like I just finished running laps.”
Shane paused. “Why was your heart racing?”
I opened my mouth to reply, then I closed it. Because I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I hadn’t been depending on him to defend me from Chloe. Probably because of what happened previously at the mall.
However, I didn’t need to say anything. The guilty look on my face was enough for Shane to understand what was running through my mind.
He sighed. “I guess I deserve that.”
I stepped forward quickly. “No, I didn’t mean-
He shook his head, cutting me off. “No, I get it. You had every reason to doubt me before. But I want you to hear me clearly this time.” His voice dropped, and became firmer. “From now on, you won’t have to wonder if I’ll defend you. You won’t have to second-guess me. I’ll be there.”
Something in his tone made my chest tighten. It wasn’t like some dramatic proclamation. It was firm, like he was stating a fact, not an empty promise.
There was silence for a moment, then Shane exhaled, and his serious expression changed into a grin. “Alright, enough heavy talk for not. Admit it. Watching her stomp away like a kid throwing a tantrum was satisfying.”

I couldn’t stop the small laugh that slipped out. Okay, fine. A little.”
Just then, another voice chimed in. “So, tell me, shane…”
We all turned. Asher stepped out from a corner like he had been waiting there the whole time with a smirk on his face. “How did that feel?”
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. “How… How long have you been standing there?”
Asher grinned and gave a dramatic wink, “Long enough.” He replied, trying to sound cryptic.
Then he turned to Shane. “So… how awesome did you feel?”
Shane chuckled. “Honestly? It was one of the best feelings in the world.”
Asher laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. “I told you. Nothing beats putting Chloe in her place.”
“Not even training days off?” Shane teased.
“Not even close,” Asher said.
I shook my head, rolling my eyes at both of them. “You two are ridiculous.”
“Maybe,” Asher said, unbothered. “But you and I know that, that made your day a little better.”
I hesitated, then gave a tiny nod. “Alright. I’ll admit it.”
Shane smirked. “Nothing but the truth.”
I sighed in exasperation, though a small smile tugged at my lips. “Let’s just get upstairs before something else happens.”
