Chapter 130
Iris’s POV
A sharp sound jolted me awake.
I sat up so fast my neck gave a painful crack. My legs were numb from being folded too long, and my body ached. I rubbed my eyes, blinking at the dim light from the lamp in the room.
I turned toward the small clock on the nightstand and blinked in surprise. It was nearly midnight.
I groaned under my breath. “Seriously?”
Had the person Rowan promised to send already come and gone? Maybe I had slept and hadn’t heard when the person came? I had been so exhausted from everything that it wouldn’t have surprised me.
If they had come and left, what now? Was I supposed to wait until morning?
I pushed myself to my feet, wincing when my calves ached. My stomach twisted with nausea. It was almost time for another dose of the tonic.
I moved toward the door, still half-asleep, and reached for the handle, then I stopped.
A tingle ran down my spine, and the sleep cleared out of my eyes as I realized something.
I wasn’t alone in the room.
My breath caught and I froze in place as my heart pounded hard against my ch
“Iris.” A familiar voice called, breaking the silence.
My heart skipped and then began racing.
That voice.
I spun around.
Rowan stood at a corner of the room, hidden partially by shadow. I hadn’t even heard the door open.
For a moment I just stared, speechless.
“How-when-“I spluttered, words scrambling in my head. “When did you get in

here?”
He didn’t answer right away. The dim light sharpened the edges of his face. His brown eyes locked on mine, looking darker than I had ever seen them, almost black. They burned with an emotion that I wasn’t sure I wanted to name.
“Why-“My voice cracked. “Why are you here? Are you the one who’s supposed to… take me?”
Rowan stepped forward slowly.
“No,” he said finally, his voice was quiet. “I’m not here to take you anywhere.”
He stopped a few feet away from me. Even with the dim light, I could see the tension in his shoulders.
“Then why are you here?” I whispered. “To come say goodbye?”
He exhaled shakily, and for the first time I noticed the slightly vulnerable look in his
eyes.
“Please don’t go.’
The words were so soft that I barely heard them, but they hit me hard, like a blow.
My lips parted, but no words came out. For a moment, I wondered if I were dreaming. Rowan’s eyes stayed fixed on mine. “Please,’ he said again quietly. “Just…listen.”
I tightened my arms around myself as my heart sped up in my chest.
“I know you’ve made up your mind,” he said softly, but steady. “And I know it m or may not have anything to do with what happened that night.”
His jaw tightened slightly, like he hated even mentioning it.
I opened my mouth, but he raised his hand with a pleading look that stopped me from speaking.
“Please,” he said again, still soft. “Just let me finish.”
His eyes searched mine as he continued. “Stay here at the Blood Moon Pack. I’ll do everything in my power to give you whatever you want.”
My vision blurred for a moment.
Something inside me wavered as I saw the desperation in his eyes.
I had braced myself for anger when I first saw him, or maybe the same icy tone he

had used in his office. I hadn’t expected this
My chest tightened until it hurt.
For several hours, I had told myself it was better this way. That leaving was the only way forward.
But hearing him now, so raw and vulnerable, made every wall I had built feel thin and almost nonexistent.
I felt tears well up in my eyes before I could stop them.
