Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 144

Chapter 144

Iris’s POV

It was Shane who broke the silence.

“Your husband? Alpha Eric is your husband?”

I shook my head. “No, he ‘was’. Not anymore. I signed the divorce papers before I left.”

Jasmine furrowed her eyebrows. “Was it because of…Evie?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

Her eyes were wide, but she kept her voice soft. “Iris… how? How could he-how did Evie-”

My throat burned. “She was sick. The Moonbane curse.”

The words caught in my chest. I forced them out anyway.

“That night she… she started seizing because she heard Eric say that she was a mistake. The emotional stress was too much for an eight year old.”

Jasmine covered her mouth in horror.

“I begged Eric to drive us to the clinic. He finally did, but halfway there Zara, his lover, called him. She said that her daughter Tiffany, had fallen down the stairs and was bleeding.”

I swallowed hard. “He stopped the car. He said Evie was faking the seizure, tr manipulate him.” My voice cracked. “He turned the car around.”

Jasmine gasped. Shane’s jaw tightened.

“I begged him. I screamed. He told me to get out of the car.” My vision blurred with tears. “Evie was barely breathing in my arms. And he… he drove away.”

My breath hitched. “She looked at me and said she knew her father didn’t love her like he loved Tiffany.”

Tears spilled before I could stop them.

A shiver ran through me. “And then… she was gone before we reached the clinic. By the time I carried her there, on foot, it was too late.”

“You’re right,” she said quietly. “You can’t stay here especially as he’s now in an alliance with this pack.”

Shane nodded in agreement. “We’ll take you to a safe place ourselves. But it has to b now, before anyone realizes you’re gone.”

I blinked at them, startled. “You would risk-”

“Consequences?” Shane cut in. “Yes. Rowan can yell at me later. You need to be safe now.”

Jasmine straightened her shoulders. “We’ll handle Rowan. You just get your things.”

Tears welled up again in my eyes. My throat tightened. “I can’t let you two-”

“Do you want to leave or not?” Shane interrupted firmly. “Because if you do, there’s no more time to argue.”

I swallowed hard, then nodded once, then continued packing quickly.

A soft knock sounded on the door, and all three of us froze.
