Chapter 143
I turned. The blonde from earlier, Chloe, the one he had announced as his fiancée, stood at the front row. Her pale blue dress glittered as she sauntered toward us with a bright smile on her face.
“If he’s Iris’s husband,” she said sweetly, “why keep him away from her? Maybe what he needs is to talk with her. Apologize. Then everyone can live happily ever after.”
Her tone dripped with mock innocence, but could see a gleam in her eyes. She had her motives.
But I nodded quickly. “She’s right,” I said quickly, seizing the chance. “Whatever happened between me and Iris, it’s between us. Let me speak to my wife.”
Rowan turned his head slowly toward Chloe. The look he gave her could have frozen fire.
“I don’t remember asking for your opinion,” he said sharply.
Chloe blinked, clearly taken back. “I was only-”
“Leave,” Rowan snapped.
Her mouth opened, then closed. Then she flushed in embarrassment.
“I said get out,” Rowan repeated. His voice was low but, it sounded dangerous.
Chloe’s eyes darted to me, then back to Rowan. Then without another word, she turned and walked away with stiff shoulders.
Rowan turned back to me. “Stay away from Iris,” he said coldly. “That is not a request.”
I felt my wolf stir in anger. Every part of me wanted to defy him. “She’s my mate,” I said, my voice rough.
Rowan didn’t flinch. “I don’t care,” he said evenly.
“You don’t get to decide-” I began.
“I do,” Rowan cut in. “Because she is in my territory. Under my protection. And because I will not allow anyone, whether mate or not, to hurt her again.”
My jaw tightened. “I won’t hurt her.”
“You already did, and that’s more than enough.”
Silence stretched between us.
