Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Eric’s POV

My breath caught in my throat as I read the words at the top of the document.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

I stared at it for several seconds, wondering if I was dreaming, but I wasn’t. This was reality, and it was signed.

My hands trembled as I picked it up. Her signature was right there, under her name.

A folded note was beside the divorce papers. I opened it with shaking fingers.

Congratulations, Alpha Eric. You got what you wanted.

That was all it said.

My heart slammed against my chest. What the hell?

She was gone?

Just like that?

I stood there, frozen. The silence in the house was suffocating me. Evie’s laughter was missing. There were no footsteps. The air smelt stale, no scent. The place felt cold, and dead.

When?I muttered, my voice rough. When did she

I looked around wildly. Dust coated everything. But as I looked closer, I realized that a few things were missing. It wasn’t obvious, but I noticed it.

My jaw tightened, and I looked around the abandoned room like I was looking for answers

I should be rejoicing now. I should be jubilating, but a wave of something was burning in my chest. Anger? Confusion? Guilt? I

couldn’t name it.

Maybe it was because she didn’t even let me say goodbye to Evie.

A lump formed in my throat, but I shoved it down with a scoff. No. No, this is a joke. She’s hiding somewhere around here, watching and waiting to see if I’ll fall for it. I mumbled to myself.

I turned sharply, my voice rising.

Iris!I yelled, my voice echoing through the empty house. I’m not falling for your games! You can’t just leave like this without a fight! Without any drama! That’s not how you operate!

I stormed back into the living room and slammed the agreement on the table. You think I’m stupid? I know your plan, you conniving bitch! You want to guilttrip me. You want me to chase after you! Is that it?! You want me to regret it?

I tore through the kitchen next, yanking open cabinets, flinging drawers.

Iris! Where the hell are you?

But there was no answer, just silence.

I made my way to Evie’s room again and threw the door open. Her scent had even faded.

I stood there, breathing hard.

Something cracked inside me.

Was it after that night? After I left them on the side of the road?

My stomach twisted. I didn’t want to remember it, but memory slammed my mind. Evie, seizing in the backseat. Iris screaming at me through tears as I drove away, choosing Zara because I told myself it was fake. Was I wrong? Was that why she was doing this?

No. No, she wouldn’t do this over that.

Would she?

I ran my hands over my face, trying to push the thoughts away.

Suddenly, I remembered something.

That call.

The patrol guards. They had called me earlier today when I was with Zara and Tiffany. I had told them not to disturb me.

A chill spread down my spine.

I fumbled for my phone and quickly scrolled through my call logs. Shit.

I hit redial.

The line connected, and a young male voice answered on the second ring. Alpha Eric?

It’s me,I barked. That call you made to me about Iris? Why did you call?

He hesitated for a moment before he replied slowly. Sir, we tried to inform you that she was leaving the pack. She crossed the border alone.

What?I snapped.

My chest tightened as the guard hesitated on the line.

Wewe tried to stop her, Alpha,he said finally. But she insisted on leaving.

I gripped the phone harder. Leaving? To where?

We don’t know sir..

The word hit me like a punch.

The guard’s voice dropped. We tried to talk her out of it. We told her it was too dangerous. We even asked her to let someone escort her, but she refused. She said she didn’t need help.

A dull ringing filled my ears. I stepped backward, suddenly feeling lightheaded.

My throat tightened. And you let her go?

We begged her to allow us to call you, and she agreed.,he said quickly. We called you sir and youyou answered.

I froze as I remembered my words to them before I hung up.

Don’t call me about that woman again. Do not disturb me with anything concerning her. I have better things to think about.

I remembered what I told myself after the call ended. I told myself that as far as I was concerned, she could vanish off the face of the earth and it wouldn’t matter.

I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration. What was going on with me? Why was I getting riled up now?

The guard went quiet, then spoke again, more carefully this time. We didn’t know what to do after that. She just looked at us,
