Chapter 17
Eric’s POV
The doorbell rang.

I spun toward the door like a man possessed. My heart punched against my ribs, hope flaring briefly in my chest. Maybe it was her. Maybe it was Iris. Maybe she came back. Maybe this was all some twisted game, and now she was here to explain everything.
I rushed over and yanked the door open.
It wasn’t her.
A man stood there putting on a white coat. He was a healer from the Crescent Moon Pack Clinic, and from the crest on his chest,
he was one of the senior healers.
I recognized his face, vaguely, but I couldn’t place his name. I hadn’t bothered to learn any of their names.
His eyes met mine and for a moment, something flickered in them. First surprise, then something that looked like resentment, or maybe I was just imagining it.
“Alpha Eric,” he greeted stiffly.
I didn’t return the greeting. “What a
are you doing here?
He looked thrown off by the question. “I came to see Luna Iris.” He replied slowly.
“What do you want from Iris?”
I asked.
He furrowed his eyebrows as he answered. “I came to drop these off.” He held out a large envelope. “They were meant for Luna
Iris.”
I reached for it without thinking, ripping the seal open.
The first thing I saw made my blood run cold.
Certificate of Death: Evangeline Cross
My vision blurred. I blinked fast and flipped through the papers like they were fake.
No.
No.
“What the hell is this?” I snapped, voice rising. “Certificate of what?”
The healer’s lips tightened. “Your daughter’s death certificate, sir. There are other related documents inside the envelope like the treatment notes, toxicology reports, and the burial clearance.”
My hands began to shake.
“This is fake,” I growled. “Did Iris put you up to this? What kind of sick joke is this?”
The healer’s eyes snapped to mine, and this time, the resentment in his eyes was more visible.
“Your daughter is dead, Alpha Eric.” He said coldly. “She died from the moonbane curse. The same curse we could have cured if you hadn’t shut down the research because you believed the Luna was lying.”
My blood ran cold.
“You claimed Luna Iris was manipulating you. That she wanted attention, so she was exaggerating her daughter’s condition.”

He shrugged. “There were no games or manipulation. It was the truth. The Luna never lied.”
My ears were ringing. My brain couldn’t process anything. The walls felt like they were closing in.

“Shut up.” I mumbled weakly, shaking my head frantically. “The both of you are playing a sick game, Healer”
“There are no games being played, Alpha” he continued coldly. “Your daughter is dead. That little girl took her last breath in her mother’s arms because you canceled every possible chance to save her. She died on the twenty–first of May after a severe seizure that she had after hearing that you say that she was a mistake. Luna Iris told me all that happened.”
My heart tightened. I couldn’t breathe. I remembered everything that happened that night. I thought she had been faking the seizure, trying to deceive me, like her mother.
No. No, this wasn’t happening.
“You’re lying,” I growled, but my voice shook. “You and Iris planned this. You think I’ll fall for it? You think I’ll drop to my knees and apologize? Never…”
“You know it’s true,” he said, quieter now. “You just don’t want to admit it, because you would be focused to deal with the fact that you abandoned your dying daughter that night on the road.”
My hand snapped forward before I could stop myself.
I slammed him against the wall beside the door. Papers flew from the envelope and scattered. His head hit the wall, but I was
furious to care.
“You’re lying!” I roared in his face. “Tell Iris to stop the damn games! Where is Evie?! Where the hell is my daughter?!”
He didn’t fight back. He just stared at me.
“She’s gone,” he said. “And you let it happen.”
I froze.
The healer adjusted his coat as I stepped back, breathing hard, my mind spinning.
My hand shook as I ran it through my hair. “I never heard about this. No one told me. If she died, why didn’t someone say something? Why didn’t Iris say something?!”
The healer shrugged again. “The Luna insisted that she wanted it to be kept a secret because you’ve made it clear several times that you didn’t want to be disturbed by anything concerning her.”
I swallowed hard. I couldn’t deny it. Several times when the healers tried to reach me for anything that had to do with Iris, I always shut them down and hung up.
“There was no funeral,” The healer continued. His voice was lower and calmer now.. “There was no ceremony. Just the Luna. She buried Evie behind the house quietly, and alone. No one came to say goodbye.”
