Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Iris’s POV

Where were you coming from?he asked. And where were you going?

My fingers tightened on the sheets as I replied.. It doesn’t matter.

It matters to me.

Well, it shouldn’t,I snapped, as irritation flashed through. You don’t get to ask me questions just because you saved me.

He didn’t flinch. I know that, but you almost died close to my border, so I am allowed to be a little curious.

I clenched my jaw, but I kept silent.

There was silence for a few seconds before he spoke again. Are you running from someone?

I said nothing.

He tried a different angle. You didn’t shift. You didn’t even try. Is your wolf unresponsive?

I refused to say anything even as my chest ached at the reminder that my wolf had refused to respond even when I was almost dying.

Aren’t you going to respond? He asked calmly, an unreadable expression on his face.

I finally turned my head away, glaring at the wall.

I’m not telling you anything,I said. I don’t need your help, or your pity. I just want to disappear. So if you’re planning to drag me back or contact anyone about me, don’t bother because I’m not going back.

Rowan was quiet for a long time.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calm, but firm. I’m not going to drag you anywhere. But you’re not going anywhere.

Look,I said with a sigh. I don’t want to be a burden. I just need to get to the nearest human town. I’ll figure things out from

there.

You were nearly torn apart by rogues,he said. You couldn’t even walk. Do you have any idea how close you were to dying?

I’m still breathing, aren’t I?I muttered.

His jaw tightened. You’re not going anywhere until your wounds are healed.

I don’t need your help.

Too late. You already have it.

I glared at him furiously, but he wasn’t fazed.

You’re not leaving until you’re fully healed,he said, folding his arms again. You’re injured, exhausted, and from what I can tell, you don’t even have the will to survive. If I let you go now, I would be digging your grave a day later.

You don’t know that,I muttered.

I can see it in your eyes. You feel that you have no reason to live.

My heart pounded, and I clenched my jaw, avoiding his eyes, staring at the sheets instead.

I just want to be left alone,I whispered.

He nodded. I will make arrangements for that. No one will disturb you while you’re here.

I bit down hard on my bottom lip, then I closed my eyes.

Justdon’t tell anyone where I am,I whispered.

I won’t.He promised.

Someone will bring food for you shortly,he said as he made his way to the door. And someone will check your stitches later tonight.

I didn’t say thank you.

Immediately he left, my mind began to race with several thoughts.

I was still too weak to run. My body was severely injured. My wolf was still silent, and was hiding in the dark place she had disappeared into after everything that had happened. I didn’t even know if she would ever come back.

But I wasn’t planning to stay here.

I didn’t care how calm or composed Rowan Bane seemed. I’d heard the stories. I knew the kind of Alpha he was rumored to be.

I wasn’t going to wait around long enough to find out if the rumors were true. No matter how warm his brown eyes looked.

The moment I could stand, I was going to escape, no matter the pain I was in.

A thought flashed through my mind, and suddenly my eyes widened.
