Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 27

Chapter 27

Iris’s POV

The smile slipped off my face the second the new woman entered.

My grip tightened slightly on the blanket.

She was tall. She was maybe a few years older than me, with long blonde hair. She had sharp gray eyes that reminded me too much of Zara because of the same barely-hidden contempt in her expression as she looked straight at Jasmine, completely ignoring me.

Same smugness and arrogance. My chest tightened. I thought I had escaped people like this.

“Who is this?” she asked, like I wasn’t sitting right there on the bed, very visible.

Jasmine didn’t even blink. She rolled her eyes with dramatic groan. “She’s right there, Chloe. Try asking her yourself next time. Also, have you ever heard of knocking?”

Chloe crossed her arms. “What are you doing here?”

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. “I live here. This is my brother’s room. What are you doing here?”

“I’m looking for Rowan.”

Jasmine glared at her. “That’s Alpha Rowan to you.”

Chloe narrowed her eyes at her, like she wanted to say something in response, but was holding it back.

I had no idea what their history was, but clearly, they weren’t friends.

I watched the back and forth quietly, my head starting to throb again. I didn’t have the energy for whatever this was. Honestly, I wished they would take their argument outside and close the door behind them.

Chloe’s jaw clenched, and she glared at Jasmine before she finally turned to look at me. She studied me like I was a stain she couldn’t scrub out of white clothes.

Jasmine’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced at it, and she released an annoyed hiss. She sighed and stood up. “Ugh. I need to take this,” she muttered, then she glanced toward me with something close to regret. “Don’t listen to anything Chloe says, alright?”

I gave her a tired nod, wishing she would take Chloe with her, or even take me with her.

She looked back at Chloe with a glare. “Try not to embarrass yourself,” she added before stepping out with the phone pressed to her ear, and shutting the door behind her.

And just like that, I was alone with Chloe.

The moment Jasmine was gone, Chloe’s expression darkened.

Her gray eyes scanned me from head to toe, and I could feel the judgment crawling under her skin.

“Who the hell are you?” she snapped with venom in her voice.

I didn’t answer. I was too exhausted to exchange words with her. My body still hurt, my stitches throbbed every time I breathed too deeply, and I was struggling to remain sitted. I wanted to lie back.

Chloe narrowed her eyes. “Are you mute?”

I stared back at her.

Her lips curled into a sneer. “Do you even know who I am?”

I didn’t, and I didn’t care. But she clearly expected an answer, so I blinked once in response.

Her eyes darkened. “I’m Chloe Harper, the soon-to-be Luna of this pack. And I can have you thrown out of this pack with a single word.”

I lifted an eyebrow at that, but said nothing. She thought that was a threat. But being thrown out of here sounded more like a solution.

That was exactly what I wanted, but I kept that thought to myself.

“Are you scared? Good!” Chloe said, mistaking my silence for fear. I didn’t bother correcting her. Maybe it would

make her leave faster.

My stitches ached. My head throbbed badly. Someone please come take this woman away! I thought to myself in despair.

She took a step forward. “You think just because Rowan found you bleeding in the woods and gave you a place to sleep, that you belong here? Let me make something clear, you don’t!”

She stepped closer like she expected her presence alone to intimidate me.

“I’m going to ask you one more time,” she said, her tone growing harsher. “What are you doing in Alpha Rowan’s room?”

Before I could even think of a response, not that I had the energy to respond her, a voice came from behind her.
