Iris’s POV

Chloe turned towards the door, her face changed in an instant. The sneer vanished, and was replaced by a soft, sugary smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Her body language shifted. She was no longer trying to look intimidating. She was trying now to look smaller, and more delicate
She clasped her hands in front of her like a shy schoolgirl, tilting her head slightly. Her eyelashes fluttered as she looked up at him. The switch in personality was so fast, that it made my skin crawl.
“Alpha,” she said sweetly. “It’s so great that you’re here. I was just… talking to our guest.”
Her voice changed to a soft sugary tone, as she tried to cover her true self, hoping that Rowan wouldn’t notice. She was exactly like Zara-a demon pretending to be an angel whenever Eric was around.
I watched her with an amused smile on my lips. It felt almost like deja-vu.
She even laughed a little, but it sounded too high-pitched to be natural. “I just thought it would be good to introduce myself and, you know, get to know her. Since she’s staying here and all. I thought maybe she would feel more welcome if someone like me reached out.”
I almost scoffed at her words. Someone like her? Who was she?
Rowan gave her a cold stare. His eyes weren’t the ones that I remembered. They looked very unfamiliar.
They weren’t the warm brown eyes I had seen in the woods or when he spoke to me. His eyes were hard and distant as he looked at Chloe coldly.
It was the first time I had seen that look in his eyes, and I was so glad that it wasn’t directed at me. I almost pitied Chloe. Almost. But from her earlier attitude towards me, she deserved everything she was getting.
Chloe noticed the shift too. Her smile faltered slightly and she paled.
“What brought you to my room in the first place, Chloe?” Rowan asked. His voice was calm, but it was very sharp.
Chloe blinked, and she suddenly became flustered as she stuttered.
She glanced at me, as if she was hoping I would back her up. I scoffed internally. In her dreams.
She nervously fidgeted with the sleeve of her dress, and her smile was starting to fade. She clearly hadn’t expected Rowan to call her out. Maybe she thought her looks and sugary tone would be enough to escape.
“Oh. My father… My father asked me to come find you. He wanted to talk about the ceremony. About the arrangements-”
“I told your father not to disturb me unless it was urgent,” Rowan said, cutting her off immediately.
The chill in his voice made the back of my neck prickle.
“You and your father both know very well that I do not like being disturbed in my quarters.”
He didn’t yell or raise his voice. But he didn’t need to. His voice sounded calm, but it was deadly.

The room went dead silent.
Chloe looked like she had been slapped. Her lips parted like she wanted to defend herself, but no sound came out. She glanced at me pointedly, almost like she was silently questioning my presence in his room.
She stared at him, her cheeks flushing pink from embarrassment.
“I” she tried again.
“Leave,” he said before she could finish. I had no idea someone could sound so commanding without even raising their voice.
Chloe froze.
Her mouth opened, then closed again. It was obvious that she wasn’t used to being dismissed. She clenched her fists, and for a second, I thought she would argue. But the look on Rowan’s face made her think twice..
Her eyes flashed as she glanced toward me for a second. But in that one second, I could feel the boiling rage she was holding back, like she was blaming me for her shame.
Of course she was going to blame me. Her pride had been bruised, and she needed someone to aim her anger at, and the only person available was me.
She didn’t say a word. She just shot me a look like she wanted to set me on fire. I didn’t flinch. Instead, I held her stare, even though my body was still too weak to sit upright.
I knew that I had nothing to prove to her, but I also refused to cower. I had bowed my head to the wrong people before, but not anymore.
Her lips twitched, like she was fighting the urge to say something venomous. But she bit it back.
