Chapter 29
Iris’s POV
There was silence after Chloe left. I stared at the edge of the blanket covering my legs, feeling very awkward.
I didn’t move. I wasn’t sure what to say, or if I was supposed to say anything at all.
Rowan stood there for a moment, then he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration as he released a deep breath, before turning toward me.
His eyes softened almost immediately, but I still couldn’t forget the sharpness I had seen a few moments ago.
I had seen the Alpha side of him for the first time, and it was unforgettable. I ignored the tingling running down my spine at that thought.
He walked to the single armchair that Jasmine had sat in earlier. He dragged it slightly closer to the bed before sitting down.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice was quiet.
I nodded slowly, completely unsure of what I should say. The truth was that I wasn’t really fine. But I didn’t want to talk about Chloe, or what she had said.
He watched me carefully, as if he was looking for any sign that Chloe’s presence had affected me in any way. I wasn’t sure what he saw, but he leaned back slightly, with his usual unreadable expression.
“I’m sorry about her,” he said after a pause.
“You don’t have to apologize for her,” I murmured. “I’ve dealt with worse people than her.”
My mind flashed back to Zara.
Rowan didn’t say anything for a moment. His jaw tensed for a second, like he wanted to say more but decided to keep quiet.
“Are you both close?” I asked.
He scowled. “Unfortunately, yes. Our families go back a long way. Her father has been pushing for a union between us since we were teenagers.”
I swallowed as I looked at him carefully
“She said she’s going to be Luna,” I said slowly, not really sure why I brought it up.
Rowan exhaled, like he was already tired of talking about this subject. “She wants to be.”
That didn’t sound like a yes, neither did it sound like no.
“Are you really going to allow her to be the Luna of this pack?” I asked, tilting my head curiously.
Rowan sighed, staying silent for a moment. Then he shook his head. “No. I don’t think so.”
I gave him a curious look.

Chapter 30
Iris’s POV
Something fluttered in my chest, and for a second, I didn’t know how to breathe as a sudden warmth spread through me.
I looked away immediately. A part of me wanted to question what he meant, but another part was terrified of the answer, because I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear it just yet.
“I haven’t thanked you,” I said quietly. “For everything. For bringing me here, for making sure I was treated. You didn’t owe me anything, and I… I really am grateful.”
Rowan nodded, then he stood up, and the weight in the air shifted, like whatever spell had passed between us had lifted.
He picked up the tray and gathered the empty plate and cup. “You need rest,” he said softly. “I’ll send Jasmine to bring your medicine later.”
I nodded again. My throat still felt tight.
It was absurd seeing him, an Alpha, carrying a tray with my empty plates. But he didn’t seem bothered in any
way.
Rowan paused at the door. “And I’ll make sure Chloe stays away from you.”
I blinked. “Where will you stay?” I asked before I could stop myself. “I mean, this is your room. I can go back to
the other one-❞
“No,” he said immediately. His voice was firm, and left no room for argument. He looked over his shoulder. ” This space is more comfortable. You’ll need it more than I do.”
