Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 42

Chapter 42

Iris’s POV

“What are you snapping out of?” a voice said from the door.

My breath caught.

I looked up and immediately groaned.

Of course. It had to be Chloe. How didn’t I hear her? Was I so lost in thought?

She stood at the door with her arms crossed over her chest, and her blond hair curled to perfection. She had that familiar sneer glued to her face.

“What do you want?” I asked, not bothering to hide the exhaustion and irritation in my voice.

She smiled sweetly. “Just came to check on the little stray that everyone has been fussing over.”

I didn’t respond.

She tilted her head. “You know, it’s funny. You’ve only been here for a few minutes, and already you think you matter. You’re even talking back at me.”

I released another groan in response.

She didn’t take the hint. “I just thought you should know,” she said, walking into the room, “Rowan is mine. We’re getting engaged soon.”

I blinked. Then I blinked again.

“Congratulations,” I said flatly. “What does that have to do with me?”

Chloe’s smile cracked, just slightly.

“I mean,” I continued, “I thought Rowan said he didn’t want to see you around here anymore. So what are you doing here again?”

Her nostrils flared in anger. “You think you’re special?” she hissed.

I slowly sat back against the pillows, completely unfazed. I already had a lot on my mind. “Honestly, I think I just want you to shut the hell up and leave.”

Her face twisted in fury. “I will make your stay here a living hell,” she snapped. “You don’t know who Rowan is. You think you’ve seen the real him? Please. He’ll get bored of you like he does with everyone else. And when he is, I’ll be right there, where I’ve always been. By his side.”

I stared at her. “You talk a lot for someone he has already rejected, and thrown out of his room.”

My words wiped the smirk off her face instantly.

“You are nothing,” she snarled. “You’re just like a broken toy for him to fix. Once he’s done, he’ll toss you aside.’

“And you’ll be waiting?” I asked, tilting my head. “That doesn’t sound like love, Chloe. That sounds like desperation.”

Her eyes darkened, and for a moment, I thought she would actually lunge at me.

I wasn’t looking forward to that at all. My body was still aching, and I had no wolf.

“What are you doing here?” another voice cut in.

Chloe flinched.

I turned and saw a tall man walk in through the open door. He had tousled brown hair, broad shoulders, and mischievous green eyes that gleamed with amusement as he glanced between the both of us.

“Didn’t Rowan make it clear the last time?” the man added, addressing Chloe. “Don’t make me report you for trespassing again.”

Chloe straightened quickly, clenching her jaw. “I’m not trespassing. I was just having a polite conversation with our guest.”
