Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 43

Chapter 43

Iris’s POV

I couldn’t hold it anymore. I burst into laughter. It started as a small snort, but it became an uncontrollable laughter that shook my whole body.

Pain shot through my ribs, but I still couldn’t stop. Tears pricked my eyes as I clutched my side, gasping for breath.

Chloe’s head snapped toward me, her face twisting into a glare so sharp it could kill. My laughter only made her angrier.

“Glad you find this amusing,” she snapped, her voice dripping venom.

I tried to respond, but another wave of laughter hit me, and I was too busy trying not to fall over.

With a sharp scoff, she turned again and left, slamming the door so hard it almost shook the frame.

The man stood there for a moment, staring at the closed door, then he shivered dramatically. “God, I really hope she never becomes Luna… or I’m in so much trouble.”

That set me off laughing again, though I quickly tried to control it before I destroyed my ribs completely.

Silence finally settled between us, and I blinked at the man still standing in the room.

“Sorry about that,” he said, shrugging as he pointed toward the door. “Chloe’s like a fly that keeps buzzing even after you swat it.”

I grinned at his words. “I am Iris. It’s really nice to meet you.’

He smirked. “I know who you are. Word travels fast around here. I’m Asher. The pleasure is all mine.”

“Asher,” I repeated slowly. “And you’re…?”

He gave a small mock bow. “The Beta of the Blood Moon Pack. ”

I stared at him. “You’re Rowan’s Beta?”

He nodded. “In the flesh. His second-in-command.”

I relaxed a little. “Thanks for stepping in.”

“No problem.” He replied easily with a small shrug.

Asher pulled out the chair Jasmine had used earlier and sat down on it, looking completely at ease.

“So,” he said, tilting his head. “You’re the mystery girl.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Is that what they call me?”

He grinned. “No. They call you ‘the outsider Rowan is weirdly obsessed with.’ But I shortened it for your sake.”

I blinked. “He’s not-”

Asher held up his hands. “Hey, I’m not judging. I’m just saying, he doesn’t usually act like this. And he definitely doesn’t let anyone else stay in this wing, or… his room.”

I tensed slightly. “What are you trying to say?”

He gave me a lopsided grin, raising his hands in mock surrender. “Don’t worry, it’s not a bad thing. It’s just that you’re the first person I’ve seen him willingly bring into this pack who isn’t here in chains.”

I looked down at my hands. “That’s… comforting.”

I tried to sound casual, but my voice shook slightly.

Asher must’ve noticed, because his gaze softened slightly as he tried to change the subject. “I heard you’re still healing. How’s the pain?”

“It’s manageable,” I said quickly, not wanting to sound weak.

“Manageable,” he echoed, raising an eyebrow. “That’s what people say when they’re lying.”

“I’m not lying.”

“Uh-huh,” he said, clearly unconvinced. He stood from the chair. “Anyway, I was just passing through. When I saw Chloe, I decided to intervene. If she comes back, just yell for me. I love any opportunity to put her in her place.”

I couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
