Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 48

Chapter 48

Iris’s POV

Rowan stopped in the doorway. His shoulders stiffened, and for a moment, I thought he would refuse, but slowly he turned back, his expression softening slightly.

“I wasn’t planning to,” he said quietly.

He walked back and sat in the chair silently.

My eyelids grew heavier, but every time they closed for more than a second, the flashes came back-of the burning poison, the helplessness, and the fear that I might never wake up again.

I opened my eyes again and found Rowan sitting there, still watching me with his arms resting on his knees. ” What is it?” he asked.

I swallowed as my mind raced. Part of me wanted to tell him everything I suspected, to put Chloe’s name out there, to let him deal with her the way only an Alpha could. But that would go against the decision I had already made. I couldn’t make any accusations without proof.

“Nothing,” I lied.

His eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t press.

I turned my face away, pretending to focus on the blanket, but the truth was, I didn’t want him to see the way my hands shook.

Rowan stayed quiet for a long moment, but I could feel his eyes on me, like he was trying to read my thoughts with his eyes alone.

“You can’t sleep, can you?” he said at last.

I released a bitter laugh in response.

His jaw tightened again.

I stared blankly at the ceiling, my voice was quieter this time. “It’s strange knowing someone wanted me dead this bad. Just like that.”

Rowan’s eyes darkened. “It’s not strange, Iris. It’s dangerous, and it means they’ll try again.”

“You’re not going to be left unprotected again,” he continued. “If I have to stand at that door myself, I will.”

I almost believed him. But the truth was that, he was the Alpha of the pack, he surely won’t have the time to be my bodyguard at all times. If I was lucky enough, he might assign someone to be in charge of my security.

He must have noticed my hesitation, because his voice dropped lower, steadier. “I promise you, Iris. I will protect you with everything I have.”

The certainty in his tone was so firm that I found myself almost believing him. I turned my eyes toward him again. “Why?” I asked before I could stop myself. “Why do you care?”

For a split second, something flickered in his expression, but it was gone before I could read it. “Because you’re

in my pack now,” he said simply. “And I want to know who in my own pack thinks they can get away with poisoning my guest.”

His voice was cold and sharp, and it made something deep in my stomach twist. “That kind of betrayal doesn’t happen in my pack without consequences. Whoever it is, they’ll regret even thinking about it.”

A shiver went down my spine, and I wasn’t sure if it was from the aftereffects of the poison or from the way he said it. At that moment, I saw a glimpse of the Rowan Bane that caused shivers to run down people’s spines. The Rowan Bane who could make the bravest wolves shake.

Silence settled between us again. My eyelids began drooping again, but I forced them open, still feeling uneasy.

“If I fall asleep,” I murmured, “will you still be here when I wake up?”

“Yes.” Rowan replied without any hesitation.

Some of the tension in my body eased, and I involuntarily released a small sigh. My eyes closed again, but I could still hear him moving in the chair, shifting slightly as he tried to make himself more comfortable.

When the darkness came this time, I didn’t fight it.
